FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

Thanks. So definitely replace that fork seal and use a cutoff tool for that race? I want to tackle some of those things tomorrow. Nothing else to do in small town Ohio...

You will still need the rubber seal and the thin washer; I don't know if the tapered bearing kit comes with new ones. The old inner bearing race can be removed with a punch and hammer, lightly tapping the punch on alternate sides of the race.
BTW, don't spend any time making the frame look pretty until after you have proven your design; it sucks when you realize you need to weld on a bracket on a freshly painted frame. Been there... :(

Hahaha yup, I have some serious figuring to do for these batteries before I even think about painting. Because it takes so long to cure I thought I'd get a head start on some bits and pieces. Battery mounting is next weeks main priority.

Got the bottom race off. The race itself and the rubber are fine, can't say the same for that thin washer.

I just tore down my rear drum and it's soaking in the parts washer now. I was going to blast and paint it today. Just the cover that hold the brake shoes itself, not the actual hub. Can I paint the backside of that piece or should I mask it off?

Can the same be done for the hub itself? I'm sure when the shoes press against the hub it will just rub the paint off anyway.

You can paint the inside of the brake plate if you like mate, not that you need to, and as has been said before, don't paint the inside of your brake drum, apart from it being a waste of paint, it could glaze your brake shoes or just gum them up, either option is not ideal. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Got the race off.



Can't say the washer looks good anymore, but the race and the rubber are fine. I tried pounding the washer back flat but it's fairly mangled.

Having hell of a time getting the bearing out. I was using a drift and a hammer, but I hear people are heating the aluminum with a heat gun. I'll try to pull out the rubber gasket first.

Last day of good weather for a long time, so I went ahead and blasted the frame. I also wire brushed some parts that I had a hard time getting blasted. I then wiped it down several times with Naptha until the rag was clean and squirted some primer to keep it from flash rusting. If I need to do additional modification to the frame, I'll strip the area I need to modify.





Didn't have a TV so I kept refreshing the game on my phone. Go Steel!

I'm having a hell of a time getting this rear bearing retainer out. I drilled out the dimples but it's still being a pain in the ass. If I mask off the bearing real well and bead blast it, will that screw everything up? I'm sure if I get beads in there it'll wear out those bearings real fast. I cleaned all the grease out of the bearing and was planning on regreasing and reusing those bearings, and I'm afraid that pounding out the bearing will kill it.

Is it a 750 or a 550 rear hub?  One of them has reverse threads.  With all the work you are putting into this, it seems a shame that you need to reuse $5 wheel bearings.

easy way to get that off is to put 2 drill bits (up side down) that fit the hole on a table vice with the proper spacing then pic up the tire set it on the drill bits then spin the tire

the threads is revers and make sure the end of the drill bits just barely are high enough to completely catch in the hole. dont have the bits super long over the vice of ull bend them

Test fitted the motor with the finished mounts. I've VERY happy with how it came out.

Mockup with the tail and tank.





Aforementioned motor mount.





And finally got this bastard out. Had to make a wrench out of a piece of bar stock and 2 5mm bolts.

So I'm about to make my end of the world PartsNMore order.

I'm going to get myself some new fork seals, dust boots, spokes for the front and back wheels, and shocks. They don't have swingarm bushings for the '78 so I'll have to search elsewhere. I don't have my shocks handy, so does anybody know what size the stockers are? 335mm or 365mm? Also, if anybody has those particular shocks in black, is the black gloss or more of a satin?

Started to mock up battery mounts in Foam-core Aided Design. I'm pretty sure I have my final design, I just need to refine it, and make sure I have my bend allowance calculated correctly. I want to be able to remove each battery pack without taking everything apart, and I think I'll be able to achieve that.

Here's the main tray. Ignore the flaps that hang over the frame really far, they'll be trimmed. Those flaps fasten to the original frame mounts.



Here's with the batteries in place. There's a small pack that goes under the big pack, but I can't mock that up right now.





Had to put the tank and tail on to check proportions.

The mock up, looks nice and clean. The only thing that jumps out at me, is that the batteries are wider than gas tank. I guess the only way to fix that is to widen the tank to be flush, but that would be a huge pain...

Yeah that kind of bugs me too. The same holds true for the original bike, but since the batteries aren't sculpted like the actual motor it's a bit more of an eyesore. Might make a custom fiberglass "tank" down the road, but this will work for now.
