Tank Emblems needed for blasting experiment
« on: November 24, 2010, 06:57:26 PM »
Hello:
Many of us have emblems that have the paint partially flaking off. To get a real good repaint job, we need to get the paint completely off. I want to see if my sodablaster will do that without mucking up the plastic chrome parts of the emblems. If you have a broken or otherwise unwanted emblem i could practice on I'd appreciate it.

I have one K2 sidecover emblem (750Four in script) where the paint is coming off, but the chrome is still good, so I don't want to experiment on it, and possibly ruin the chrome.

My guess is it will work wonderfully, but need to test first.

It seems to me that if you can concentrate the soda on just the painted areas it will be fine. Also the new paint will hold better than the old because it will dull it up a bit. The original paint didn't stick very well and I'm looking for the best way to prep on smooth plasti-chrome finish so it will stick better. Let us know how it works out.

How about masking the plasti-chrome with pin stripe tape.  It's vinyl and pretty tough.  Comes in some very thin widths and is flexible enough to go around corners.  I agree that the soda blaster would dull the plasti-chrome.

Sorry for the hijack Ron but are there any model K tank badges that are just black and white or are they all chrome around the white.?

The black comes off that easy? )Lacquer thinner. I'll have to try it. Thanks. I'd still like some salvage emblems to practice on.

About a week and a half ago I emptied the contents of an old gas tank into a 5-gallon bucket; I figured I'd use it later to clean particularly nasty goop.  Somewhere along the line a pair of tank emblems fell into the pail and I couldn't think of a single good reason to reach into that evil stuff so they just sat there for about a week.  I fished them out a couple of days ago and every bit of the paint was lifted up, I just wipped over them with a rag that was in the bucket too and every bit of the old paint came off.

Wow that's interesting to know. I thought you were going to say the whole emblem dissolved or something like that.

So if its so easy to get the black paint off, got me thinking. Why paint it back black. For those of us doing custom reproductions, maybe paiint it the secondary color of the paint job?  Hmmmm.
