Yours look better...

Here's my CX the day I got it, non-running.  Can you you believe, he just gave it to me?  Sweet, eh?

All I really wanted was a shaft drive machine to satisfy my curiosity.

Nice one TwoTired. I look forward to seeing the "after" photos. We are picking up another one tomorrow for a donor bike. It has better chrome than mine.
After we have taken what we want, a friend is thinking of buying a CX (non-custom version) and putting the engine in the custom frame.

Nice looking CX Turtle. I was looking for one a couple years ago for my son's first street bike, but found him a Kawasaki KZ750ltd instead.

Thanks for that Terry. That site has some great "workshop manual" type articles. We finally satisfied the idiot mechanic who was doing the Roadworthy Certificate (necessary for registration), AFTER he rammed it into gear and stripped the gear lever spline, and lost the key (found it eventually). Now its all registered and legal, we find a coolant leak. Oh well. Back to the drawing board.  :'(
Its a nice bike though.

I like those old prototype pics!
They where known for leaking coolant.  Reason I heard was using auto antifreeze that has silicates to keep auto free from mineral build ups.  Its to abrasive for some of the thin casting aluminununum.
Dad had a 82 GL that seemed pretty torquie for having all that #$%* on it.

The pump seal on mine leaked, too, when I got it.  Flushed it, and ran with straight distilled water for 30 minutes. Reduced leak by 3/4.  Flushed again and refilled with straight distilled water.  After another 30 minutes run time, the leak stopped.  Flushed and refilled with 50% Dexcool.  It still doesn't leak even with full coolant pressure.  The bike isn't really road worthy yet so I only have a few test miles on it.  But, I can say for sure this process was easier and cheaper than changing the mechanical seal.

Cheers,

twotired thanks for the tip. Mine has a coolant weep as well. I'll try that before we get carried away with new seals. :-*

I went for a quiet neighbourhood ride on Sunday and the weep became a torrent. We pulled the waterpump off and the last **#@&! that worked on it had reassembled it minus the thrust washer! That's not the worst of it. He'd stripped the spline in the impeller and stuck it back on with silicone!!!! Some people don't deserve bikes.  ???

Turtle,
Congrats on the new CX! I'm definetly envious. I'd like to find a sweet deal on one near home. I think it would make a killer cafe bike!

Enjoy!

Thanks Disco.
The wreck of a second CX was the best investment - it has saved us heaps on replacement parts already.
We got the replacement seal etc. today but a thunderstorm and resulting power cut meant work had to stop for tonight. :( There's always tomorrow.

I have a friend in PA with a CX - they live near Bloomsburg (Cattawissa?).

Jane,
Sorry to hear about the power outage. Perhaps a lantern would be a good investment, so that you can always keeps working on the CX.  ;D

Bloomsburg is about 80 Miles SE of my piece of paradise.

Gotta lantern. Didn't want to stuff something up though with our aging vision.
