1975 Honda cl360 scrambler

I just purchased a cl360 scrambler. At the time of purchase the bike started and ran just fine. After trucking it home and starting it in my garage, the engine started to ping/knock, loudly. The sound is coming from the top left side. Does anyone know what the sound could be? Even with the ping/knocking, the bike goes into gear and seems to ride just fine. Have not left it running or rode it far, in the fear of doing damage.

Did you check the oil before you bought it/after you got it home?

How many miles does it have.  These bikes can be quite delicate and if ridden hard they have a tendency for the valves to bend, and the cams to possibly blow up.

Remove both plugs and compare them, if it's valve damage the left will def look different to the right.

Hmmm....   Never heard THAT reputation before.  Bending valves?  Cam blowing up?  Wow.

Only thing I ever heard of was a gimpy camchain tensioner in early models, fixed by a recall; and the possibility of galling the aluminum cam bearing surfaces in the head if oil is not kept clean and topped up.

I'd pull the points cover and watch the end of the cam for smooth running.  Is it wobbling, as in a loss of bearing support?  Maybe pull the valve tappet covers off that side and check tappet clearances.  Watch 'em while running too, for problems.  Maybe a bit oily, but not terrible for a few minutes of troubleshooting...

Good luck with it.  Let us know what you find.

beautiful looking bike. I would check the oil, then follow the manual procedure of routine maintenance....such as valve tappet clearances, points gap, timing, cam chain tension, etc. and see if it is still "pinging/knocking"

Looks like a CB450(DOHC) tank - didn't know it would fit.......
