I had to cut my old fuel lines off while doing a carb clean. They were ratty and in need of a swap. But the replacement hose diameter I had ordered is too large. Can someone tell me the correct size hose - possibly both internal diameter and if there is a type recommended.

I just spent 10 minutes withthe fiche bulk hose section. Headache!

The type I bought was from bike bandit, and it's translucent and not rubber like the old ones. It's stiffer. Not sure if putting non-OEM hoses on (even correct diameter) will adversely effect the fuel flow.

Does the material make a difference? The new stuff I got doesn't seem insulated like the old rubber kind. It's just not as thick.

I definitely want to make sure I've got the right type. But was hoping I didn't need to pay OEM prices.

I recently got the ordinary black hose from here. I was happy to pay the price to be sure of no leaks.

I'm not familier with the bikebandit product, but doubt either are "insulated"! Sounds like a cheap replacement.

If you don't use the correct 5.5mm I.D., the hoses will either split because you used too small diameter or fall of and/or leak because the next regularly available popular size is 1/4 inch. For the latter you will need clamps at each nipple.

Personally, I would never use 1/4 inch again (I did 20 years ago). I got some 5.5mm through the Honda dealer after being disappointed by the 1/4 stuff. I think all the Japanese bikes used 5.5mm at some time. So, other dealers might be an option.

Of course, after the apocalypse, you'll adapt whatever size you can find.

It turns out the kind I got was "racing line" fuel line. It's indeed 5.5 mm, but not black and rubbery like the old stuff I had on there.

I definitely don't need racing anything, but it may work for the time being, until I get get the type linked by Frosty.

I think I'm just going to look for the black 5.5mm. No need to mess with it. Fuel...It's the lifeblood after all...

Correction: it's 1/4" diameter! Damn it. Chalk it up to the first parts order I made. Stupid. I have some clamps - but you are saying this still leads to problems, unless the apocalypse comes before I get new stuff???

I might just do that. All you great resources on here have been incredibly gracious, but I know I often feel guilty about having to have one of you tell me how to do the most simple things. It might be good to have a noob 101 thread. The FAQ is great, but sometimes even that is over the head of the uninitiated. Especially some common terms, that don't jive with the manual terminology.

Maybe it can be like: "you know you are about to make the most basic mistake, well, I just finished doing that incorrectly, here's how you can skip that gaff."

And I could add the Internet term primer: DHSADQ (d%#khead, stop asking dumb questions!)

Hey, at least you're taking the time to make sure everything works.
One person I know bought a used bike that ran rough and has never tried to make it better.
He's always running on half choke, and his brake fluid is almost black with age and contamination.
Asking how to do something is always better than ignoring problems with the bike.

Agreed. My first goal has been to make this beast safe. The PO obviously let certain things go that really shock me sometimes. It's NYC after all, and there is no reason to add the bike's condition to the list of factors that make driving in this city a challenge.

But I have to admit, I'm ready for some of the fun stuff. I have been racing the clock - both weather and daylight savings, to make sure I get the majority of this done before the freeze sets in.

Soon enough....soon enough. Patience.

I do believe that it will have been a rewarding few months when all this is behind me. But after finding a few of these "quick fixes" the PO left for me, I'm ready for those few months to be over

FWIW,

Fabricator and myself use braided VW fuel line. The stuff they used on the air cooled motors, I think it's 5 or 5.5mm. It fits so well that there is no need for clamps, and the only ways to get it off is to cut it or dab a little gas on the outside and it will release. We get our line from a local VW resto shop.
