Author Topic: CB500 vs CB550 exhaust (Read 7852 times)

Now that I know about my carb interchangability, (see previous post), my next question is about exhaust. My "72" CB500 has aftermarket 4 into 2 exhaust on it. I want to replace these with original 4 into 4 mufflers. Will the CB500 and CB550 exhaust interchange? Any modifications to do this? Thanks, Jerry

I believe the 500 & 550 are esentially the same engine; block at least. The exhaust should attach to the block OK, but I'm not sure how "drop-in" freindly all of the mounts & hangers are. Need the experts to elaborate on this one. Also, I assume the K's (stock 4-4) as the F's had a stock 4-1. And the 4-4's had an internal condensation issue (read that rotting out) if the typical ride was short, not allowing them to heat up enough.

All the Cb500 and 550 stock 4 into 4 exhausts were the same, mounts and all, EXCEPT the 77and 78 Ks.

If you have the $$, go for NOS (new old stock - in other words, new exhausts that have been in someone's warehouse for 30 years).

David Silver has them at about $120 each plus shipping.

If you buy any 4-4 exhaust, don't forget that you'll need the hangers and the little rubber links and clamps that you will see on the parts diagram.

Steve, I just looked at David Silvers....I can't seem to find the 4-4. I find 4-2 or 4-1 but didn't see a part number for the 4-4. Can you help?

I'me thinking I'll order them, if I could figure out the exact parts numbers, and would the attachment thingys come with them, or would those be seperate part numbers?

You should be able to reuse all your old clamps, brackets, nuts and bolts.

Interesting site for restorers. How come they don't show pictures of their parts?
I'd like to see a picture of those silencers before I lay down the cold hard.

Some of the aftermarket stuff comes with pictures (exhausts etc) and I have noticed photos creeping into the lists for some of the models (400?)

I guess it's a case of the 21st Century finally catching up with a company that sells NOS Honda stuff.

As long as it's genuine Honda NOS - why do you need a photo?

Believe it or not those aint NOS. Honda still manufacture them!!!!!(Chrome quality aint quite as good as 30 years ago but its pretty good) BUT NOT the 77/78 ones. If you aint got them you will also need the exhaust hanger brackets, easiest way is to e-mail dave silver and ask how much for a COMPLETE system with shipping BUT BE ADVISED your customs man will want a "cut" before you can actually have them. Also try www.westernhillshonda.com as even if they are a bit dearer you dont pay import duty. If you really want i can give you all the part numbers

So why don't they make the 77/78 zorsts Bryan? (speaking as someone who has 3 out of 4 rotted out - the only good one is the one that DS has!)

and a 78'. I've got a system for the 78', even though it's not in the best of shape. Thanks.

As far as I know the 77-78 frames and exhausts were the same and should interchange without problem or other interference issues.

If you are asking if these exhausts will fit on previous models of 550, there are a lot of variables. K/F for one. I would be concerned for not only the frame attachments, but interference with brake lever arms and side stand too. There is also the jetting issue as well.

CB550 engine is just a CB500 Four with a bigger bore to correct the lack of power that most owners were complaining. The reason why 77-78 CB550K exhausts were not being made now is because they were less popular than the original style mufflers but they are usually cheaper to buy if you can find them. I saw a couple of 1971-1976 CB500 and CB550 Fours fitted with 77-78 type exhausts so I guess they can fit too.

Harry (Teicher) and myself have scoured Europe for these exhausts. Maybe they are rarer here because we only had the 550K3 with that system and then for only 77-78 and in relatively small numbers as everyone wanted a GS. The earlier 550s were all Fs. Maybe I should get a set of 500 pipes (and a US "550Four" sidepanel badge)

hmmm... seems I don't have to.

However, the info is interesting. Might explain why the older 4 into 4 is available in the UK and sparse here in the states. I think the K3 4 into 4 is hard to find anywhere these days.
