Starter button popped out!
« on: March 15, 2006, 02:38:06 PM »
It was warm today and I thought it would be a great day to go for a ride - but, much to my surprise, when I hit the starter button and released it, the thing just popped right out of the housing!

Before I go to the expense and trouble of finding the correct replacement handlebar switch assembly, does anyone know if it's possible to repair this? I hate to pull the wires out of the handlebars and disassemble the wiring in the headlight housing if I don't need to. Help!

My starter button is broke off.  If you push something metal in the hole it will start.  I usually carry a pen, so I just push the tip of the pen in the hole and it engages.  I have also used a knife tip, screw tip, paper clip.

This system doesn't fix the problem, but at least I can still use the electric start.

You should have a chrome lever at the side of the engine that can  be used to start the engine so I’ve been told.  ;D

Yes you can get a new starter button. Mine did the same thing. Got mine from Western Hills Honda. I would imagine you could order it from any Honda dealer. You will have to take the switch apart to replace it. You will also need the spring if you did not catch it when the button fell apart. Check out the parts diagram on Service Honda's website. Also, this can be done by taken the two screws out and opening the assembly up.

If you loose the starter button spring and are in a pinch, take the spring out of a Bic retractable ballpoint pen and cut it into thirds. One third should do the trick. I've done it and it works well.

The button assembly is pretty easy to get apart, but there are two springs and some small bits in there.  Be careful you watch where those things fly so you don't have to go crawling around in the dirt in the middle of the night without a flashlight... not that I would know.

Yeah the button is easy to get apart but a bear to get back together.

I finally got mine back together after 8 or more tries and the next to last time almost had to use the Bic pen spring trick.....but I managed to find the little bugger.
