Tank and seat options for a 1978 CB750K?
« on: March 16, 2006, 12:03:16 AM »
I just recently bought a 1978 CB750K and want to slim down the bulbous tank and seat configuration. I've been told that there are other tanks and seats that will fit from other models, but I can't find any info to back this up. Can anyone help me out with some info? I also own a 1971 K1 which has been reduced to a parts bike and I am also fixing up a 74 350f, none of these items match up.

77 and 78 k seats can be interchanged. Earlier models hinged on the right side. You might be able to use the 77-78 F tank and seat but you would want to replace in pairs. Otherwise you are looking at modifications. The 79 tank and seat might fit but I am not sure. Is your tank in good shape? if it is, I might take it if you want to get rid of it. I like that seat and tank.

Thanks so much for the reply. I really dig the 78 runs and handles, (probably better than any other 750K I've ridden) but I do personally like the more squarish tank of the f's. The tank I have is in really good shape. The bad-There is a very shallow quarter sized dent in the top which is framed in by one small rust spot right above that on the wrinkle behind the head tube, and it is faded where the seat covers at the very back of the tank. It's that kind of purple, brown color with the gold stripes. The seat is fine. The pan is great, the trim is perfect and the foam is good, but the cover is cracked to pieces. If I can find a tank and seat to swap I'd definitely want to find them a good home. If you like I can send you some pictures soon.

Take a look at the custom chrome or Drag Specialties v-twin catalogues. They sell gastank mounting kits, that would allow you to run "american" bike fuel tanks on your CB. i.e Sporster, along with other custom tanks which are available..Basically all it is , are four "tabs, which get welded to the backbone of the bike, and allow the tank to rest and be attached to them..Go look at a BigDog chopper , look under the tank , and you will see what I mean...

I plan to do this to my CB when I do a complete tear-down of the bike this comming fall...

Best thing you can do is pull the K8 engine and fit it to an earlier K1-K6 rolling chassis mate, the K7/K8's weren't reknowned for being better handling bikes then their much better looking forbears, so stick your K8 engine in your K1 frame, fit some of Tims 50 dollar Boge shockers and fit the K8 forks, and you'll have a beautiful looking, and better handling K1.

Sell Eldy that fugly K8 tank for his old dunger so he can finally ride it and stop yapping about it, make sure you charge him enough to cover those shocks, it's a fair trade off, as there can't be too many good K8 tanks around now mate, they certainly weren't a popular bike, so most have been converted to something more useful and asthetically appealing, like dog food cans, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Too right mate, too right. :D I never thought of doing anything that extreme, but I do have a K1 rolling chassis in my garage. Now I have next winter planned.  ;D

Carpy has some nice seats using a stock base. www.cb750cafe.com I think they are about $300, though :-\

Yeah, I've seen those. They're nice. But 3 bills + shipping is too much for me.  :'( After much haphazard drinking and deliberation, I think I'm gonna modify the seat hinges and plop a K1 seat and tank on it. Any thoughts?  :o

Ahh I see terry is still upset that my k8 weighs less than his hogger f2!

The depths of people jealousy is soo amazing! Besides, the k8 has a better frame than most the the earlier 750s. I do not have the head shake or anything like that.

And just for terry, I can ride anytime, ONCE OUR SNOW AND ICE IS GONE!!! ;D

...OK, u boyz take it outside... ::)  Unlucky, I share u'r frustration with lack of options in seats for our bikes.  I'v got an old seat I'm gonna carrry to the local upholster and see what he can do for me.  I'd be willing to do 150 for a decent looking seat... old dude in this post http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=8014.0 said he paid 150 to have his reupholstered...this is the look I'm going for...

That is a nice seat. $150 is totally reasonable for that too. What I decided to do with this bike was cut the back seat hinge off the 78 frame and mate a K1 seat and tank combo to the K8. As soon as it's done I'll throw some pics up. I also found a guy making some really nice cafe seats that are less reasonable but pretty cool considering the taillight setup.

Much love for you K8 guys, by the way. I do like the 78 frame, and I like the handling, but I just can't see covering up such a gorgeous engine with all that gas tank. To me, it makes it look like a Harley, except that it didn't cost 20K, runs well, can take a corner and doesn't leak oil.  ;D

Not that I am aware of..This tank came on the bike when I bought it last year. From what I have read and seen , it is from
A K8 bike. I kinda like it , and I kinda don't. I have another tank, from a K2 that I painted in "suede", which will be going on the
bike soon. I will then make my decision which one I will keep.

Leaning towards the K2 tank....

This past weekend I put my new stock seat on the bike, which is from a 1972 CB750K2.
So, as of now, I am running a K2 seat on a K2 bike with a K8 tank........
