Just got a call from the Powder Coat dude.  I just dropped the Frame, swing arm, fork plate, tool box, chain gaurd and couple mount plates off on Monday, and he just called and said it was done.  I figured a week or two.  So ill get pics up tonight or tomorrow.  wowzerz!!

I tried a guy in Brownsburg recommended by my buddy that restores vintage dirt bikes.  He has no personality but did the job in 2 days. Ill post pics tonight.  Theres some old guy working with him that use to drive indy cars way back in the day.
He blasted and powder coated my Frame, Chain Gaurd, 2 motor brackets, the tool tray, Swing arm, and the upper fork bracket , Kick stand and Center Stand for $200.00.   Seems like a fair deal.

yes he blasted and powder coated.  Here in Brownsburg, IN there are a lot of race teams on this one street, including John Force. I would of thought he would be a little more expensive, but he was right in the ball park of the other powder coaters.

Powder Coating is a competitve business, especially in Indy and surrounds. Especially for black, and the basic colors, usually 6 or 8.

I went with Indy Powder Coating as they offer hundreds of colors and finishes, without surcharge. I went with a candy gold metallic, which requires multiple passes of special powder. They have to buy powder in bulk, and if its a color they don't have in stock, they buy the bulk quantity and put the unused portion in stock, and just bill the customer for the used portion. The smaller coaters will bill the cutomer for the whole order as they don't want to stock it and maybe never use it. Understandable.

I priced several smaller outfits and with the surcharge for 8lbs of special order powder, and only using 2-3lbs, the price was higher than IPC.

The trade off is IPC average price is about 15 to 20% higher on everything, so basic colors are cheaper elsewhere.

That was my experience anyway, about 1.5 years ago. Could be different now.

yeah this was my first time sending something off to get painted.  I was happy with the price/time/quality ratio.  It would of taken me for ever to sand, primer paint, etc.  Very pleased not to have to do that.   I did however look at the one you used, MC, and the pricing was about the same like you said for a semi gloss black, and whats nice for me is this guy is literally 2 miles from me.

Got nothing done last night, was feeling bad and just went to bed :/

i purchased the super expensive wiring harness, since i can recoupe it with some parts ill sell :/  but it will be new.

  You got that right!  I just wish i didnt have to splurge on that high cost harness.  But i will say , i will definetly compare it to the 73-76 harness to see what the difference is. That would save me about $80. or so.

I struggled with the harness decision too. The old one was functional, but the covering was so brittle it was breaking everytime I touched it. Add to that the prospect of cleaning each terminal as should be done in a proper restore, and the decision became easier.

i agree, MC,  I will still inspect the new harness and prob dab a bit of solder on the connectors for added strength, unless its been done on it already.

Cleaned the forks up and got as many parts as possible cleaned and even wheeled on some bolt heads.

guys i dont even know what im doing and still got these things to shine up decent.  All i did was scrub with a green soft scrub and then put on a wheel with some white. Then i buffed out with a towel.   Obviously not perfect but im not doing a mint restore.

Top one not done yet, bottom one the first time ive ever wheeled anything.


Heres both of them done, front and back. Kudos to those guys that can spend endless hours shining stuff.

Well last night my dirt bike buddy came over to help me finish the forks. 1st time for me doing forks. We took them apart cleaned them , installed new seals and new fork oil 7.5 ounces (lucas fork oil).   I read all the posts about using ATF and regular motor oil.  My local motto shop had this fork oil for $6 so I went with it.  Its 15 weight Fork oil.  Put new seals in it using a piece of PVC to set it in place.  So far so good. 

still waiting for my wiring loom and will be tearing into the rims soon.  Too cold to go out and clean the engine like i want, might have to do it in the garage :/
