ignition wiring
« on: April 29, 2005, 02:48:26 AM »
hello,

I'm chasing down wiring gremlins on my '72 500, when I realize that the BR/W wire that comes from the ignition switch isn't sending any current to either BR/W wire that connects to the illuminating bulbs in the speedo and tach. the wire from the headlamp bucket to the ignition switch reads broken somewhere along the wiring harness. should I run a single wire from the bucket to the ignition switch and solder it in the place of the original which is broken somewhere, or just run these four little bulbs off another power source, like a black wire junction within the bucket?

Wires only break themselves for one of these reasons: overcurrent (they melt), pull action or repeated bending action. I bet your wire is broken at the steering junction, where the frame loom goes into the headlight shell. If it is broken, pulling the cable will extend it, meaning that the copper is broken and only the plastic insulator is there. Breake it, connect both sides together and you are good to go.

P.S. Don't forget to put duct tape at the end...;-)
