What does your customized kick starter look like?
« on: November 25, 2010, 07:12:50 PM »
The rubber is missing from mine, so I am trying to think of a way to fancy it up.

What have you done?

1.  Wrap it neatly with brass aircraft safety wire.
2.  Order new rubber with the words "kickstart" molded in
3.  Drill some holes and paint it flat black

slip some garden hose over it,or drill a hole through an artificial dog chew bone and slip it on.you might have to salivate on it first.

Ness used to run a cool little knurled peg on them. Not sure how, but I thought they turned it in a big lathe, drilled thru it on axis, cut off the original part, then tapped and mounted peg. I suppose it could be done on a drill fixture easily. Havong a register lip would help  frpm bedong the bolt.

Maybe I ahould make up a couple..

The Synthetic Rubber Coatings such as Plast Dip (or similar) would probably work.

http://www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Plasti_Dip

I've been wanting to test the Plast Dip clear in the spray can to control the coating thickness. The test would be on the underside of fenders and the inside of fork ears, both problem areas for rust and pitting. Perhaps some other miscellaneous SOHC parts could also benefit from the rubber coating?

I like the idea of knurled, no idea how to do it though.

You'd have to cut off the knob at the end of the pedal part of the kicker, slide a knurled barrel over the pedal, then drill and tap a hole on the peg for a retaining screw (or nut), and washer,
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

Yeah, but they aint round, better to cut most of it off, drill and tap.

BTW a 750 kicker is handy to have uder the seat in your cage.. if you come upon someone trapped in their sinking or burning car, if you grab the pedal end and swing it, it will break glass..

and good for maybe something else...

Spotted this one this summer at a show, no idea what it's from but doesn't seem stock for a 750.

And yeah I have a few more of the bike if anyone cares.

Here's an idea if you like "big".

Chuckstart for $119!?!  At least your foot won't slip off!

Maybe it is the "upchuck start"  at that price for a bicycle pedal I vomited in my throat.  Too cheesy custom Harley for me. The Fonz  ::) That being said, be careful of drilling a tapping something new onto the stock arm.  The stock unit it one piece, and very strong for a reason.  I can imagine the bolt shearing and the protruding stud ripping a nice gash in my right calf.

Yeah, I know I could get the rubber, but I was curios to see if anyone had some interesting suggestions.

I kinda like the safety wire idea.
