Anybody familiar with this bike?
« on: November 07, 2009, 11:06:40 PM »
I picked up this '87 Yamaha srx250 for my kids. If anybody knows where I might pick up a carb kit for it's weird carb, I'd sure like to know about it.

Thanks!

Absolutely cool bikes!!  I just missed out on one fairly recently.  Neat!

IIRC, they have a similar motor to their XT250 and TT250 dual-sport and off-road playbikes (respectively).  However, if you're mentioning a "weird" carb, I'm guessing it has the dual/2-barrel kind of deal.  The XT350/TT350 had that same deal.  You might have luck searching out stuff for the 350's.

I'd start with Thumpertalk and search around there, then perhaps Thumperstuff.  He has inventory for the SRX600 but I don't know for sure about the SRX250.

Yamaha still sells the gaskets and stuff. ??? Unless, you don't want OEM for some reason?

Thanks everyone. I wanted to see what was out there for aftermarket parts for this bike. It seems like Yamaha still makes parts for them, but I was looking for more moderate pricing. For instance Bikebandit gets $32. and change for a clutch cable + shipping. And carb parts from Yamaha are expensive. That for the cross model references, I'll check out the 350's.

A word to the wise... on cables, be careful what you buy. We bought MotionPro cables through them and they were not the same as stock. They were missing a nut and were slightly the wrong length. We ended up throwing away new cables and getting OEM ones from Honda. They were a perfect fit.

Aftermarket carb kits are decent depending on what parts you need out of them. but, if you don't need new jets, then why pay for them to be in a kit? It may well be cheaper to buy just the gasket/o-ring set through Honda/Yamaha and save. I like a good deal as much as anyone, but I've learned the hard way on our last restore that sometimes it's better to pay a little more up front and do it only once.   :) :)

Thanks for the caution. With this bike, which I think had rather small production number, it'll be key to know other models that used the same parts. The Thumper page is no longer active. There may be some help from
www.sr500forum.com/
We'll see.
It's going to take a bunch of elbow grease and a bit of judicious spending to make this bike acceptable to me and safe enough for my kids.

After twice cleaning and rebuilding the carb, and finally getting Mike Rieck to help me with it, and following replacing all the normal stuff that wears out on a 23 year old bike, I finally took the little 250 single out for it's maiden ride today. I had tried to do so a couple of weeks ago after replacing the clutch, but a bent front wheel caused too much headshake over 40mph. Got another wheel off of ebay and installed it this morning. Smooth as silk at 60mph, woo-hoo! Now I can concentrate on getting my cb750 back together. I had originally purchased the bike for my daughter after she couldn't manage the sv650 we have.
The photo enclosed is of Maylis on her bike!
