My #(%^*(#W%^ing  mother-in-law.

Anyone else have their day of thanks destroyed by a relative or an inlaw?

Not necessarily asking for stories, but for therapeutic finger pointing and laying the blame.

Whatcha got?

(lets show some respect for the moderators and keep things clean please, they do enough)

Father-in-law! He didn't really "ruin" it, but called at the last min and said he wasn't coming to our home. Upset the wifey a bit. Can't blame the guy though, he has cancer and said he wasn't feeling well. I just got drunk and had a good time!

Was the best thanksgiving in years. Divorced and no in laws or stupid rules. Ex-wife did show up in the evening and started to boss the kids around a bit. It's hard for her to understand that when she divorced me she lost all rights to tell her stepchildren what to do in my house. Old annoying habits die hard I guess. Other than that it was the most peaceful and happy thanksgiving in 5-7 years.

Alan - what did your MIL do?

It's just always been her way or the highway. My wife is going to visit a friend who's having a birthday, I'm home with the kids. If I get called in to work it falls to the in-laws to mind the kids. They rent from us and have for 6 years now (a 3 bedroom apartment for 2/3 market value) The #$%* wouldn't even discuss watching my kids because she thought it was inappropriate for my wife to be going where she's going, But she wouldn't stop preaching about 'her personal beliefs' and what she thinks 'is fair' so my wife and I walked into the bedroom and slammed the door. 1/2 hour later I came out and everyone was gone and nobody cleaned anything up.. the whole mess was still there, nice group eh?  16 years now I've been their son-in-law and have singlehandedly shovelled all snow, mowed all grass and raked all leaves. We've drained 401K's to repay the money they lent us for the downpayment on this house, when they asked for it back...and took a huge tax hit for it too when my wife got layed off that 'loan' became a disbursal...ugh! So the whole family backed her up and went back to their apartment to kiss her ass, while I cleaned everything up. The fact is that if I'm called into work and can't go...I may lose my job. If I lose my job we'll lose the house, then we're all effed! Her beliefs are her beliefs still and she won't yield. Suffice it to say I'll be the one relieving myself on her grave every time I'm in the neighborhood.

Got rid of my PITA relative in '08.  My sister-in-laws husband is now an ex, and way too late for all in the family's opinion.  Most all holidays, he would say or do something stoopid and my SIL would be in tears.  And, of course, it was not limited to Thanksgiving.  In the early years, my wife's parents held all the dinners, but in recent years, it falls to us, because a$$hole couldn't be bothered to help his wife clean up and prepare for any holiday event.

Bitter?  Not any more.

Wow, Never had one like any of these mentioned. Ours didn't go as planned, but it was because my Dad wasn't feeling well. We were going to have OUR Thanksgiving with a friend and her boyfriend. We did this last year, after my Wife passed away the previous July (in '09). Well, Wednesday morning, about 10:30 I called my Dad to remind him that we would be doing Thanksgiving on Wed. and about 1PM. He starts telling me that he wasn't feeling good and didn't feel like going out. Well, when HE doesn't feel like going out, he IS sick! So, I go ahead up there and called the Doctor's Office on the way and had to leave a message for his nurse. Just after I got to my Dad's, the Nurse called and told me to take him to the walk in clinic. So I did, they finally got us in there and checked him, to include an xray. Said he had fluid in his lungs and needed to go to the hospital.SO, I take him to the hospital and they checked him in the ER and was going to admit him to the Hospital. Well, after they checked him out, it was decided that it wasn't quite what the 1st one had said and they gave him a prescription for antibiotics and sent him home. Bear in mind that my Dad did not get Lunch (the hospital DID give him something, but it was at about  3PM
and I didn't have anything to eat all day. So, the get together never happened and Karla and I ate Supper at about 7:30PM that night. Man, I slept like a log Wed Night and til about 9AM or so Thursday Morning. And, for the record, IF I were to ask if we could come down for Thanksgiving OR Christmas Dinner and such, the door would be open, waiting for us to get there. I guess I've had an unusual situation, as I was married 38 1/2  years (when Brenda passed away) and and, for the most part, had no problems with my In Laws and still am on good terms with them. Anyway,we'll shoot for the Christmas meal now. BTW, I cooked the meal for Thanksgiving (the Main part, the Turkey and home made Corn Bread Dressing and it was Pretty good at that!  ;)

"Who ruined thanksgiving at your house this year?"

Until this year it was usually my mother, though sometimes my sister and sometimes invited guests. This year was good. Why? I'm not sure because it's always been an ordeal although my Dad not being around for my Mom to poke her finger at all day might have something to do with it.  ::) Yeah Dad's gone and I'm sure he's in a better place...like Glostah harbor where I dropped his ashes this fall.

i mixed up two gallons  of apple pie and left a half gallon at my sisters the night before thanksgiving. they were too drunk for anyone to screw up thanksgiving. i took another half gallon to my nieces house but i was runing late and most everyone had left by 6p when i got there. those that were there got drunk off the apple pie i left there. i headed to my sisters and gave them a refill from the gallon of apple pie i had left. my oldest sister usually screws up when she is around but the apple pie got the best of her, she was a good girl all nite

we finally had a nice one this year. it is usually my father in law who ruins it by either drenching the turkey with stupid spices that shouldn't even go near a turkey. or running his mouth about how everyone is out to destroy everything he has which could fit in a shoe box. the mother in law is pretty cool. the brother in law is weird. these people are the reasons why i hate hippies.neither one has a legit job. the son has been going to college for the last nine years never sticks with anything that he studies. don't let me get started on the animals. but I'm had some medical problems in the last 2 months so everyone was focused on me and trying to make me comfortable. which leads me to think i shouldn't be saying all this stuff. but dammit i used to think hippies where cool until they where actually involved in my life.and who ever says pot doesn't have any long term affects. i have solid proof that it does have long term affects. i welcome you to come and study my father in law
I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of...and the things I AM proud of, "are disgusting"

Anyone notice how it's ALWAYS the in-laws that ruin things??? Kinda funny since by definition it can't ALWAYS be the in-laws if you ask enough people...lol...it's just funny how it's never our side of the family (or ourselves)

Anyways, our holiday issues were always my MIL. She was a nasty drunk! Been gone for about 4 years now I think? I kinda miss her though (even though we never really got along, more tolerated ecahother more than anything). Hardest part is knowing that the only family my wife has is her sister. My family more than makes up for it though...they love to smother (oh wait, maybe they really did ruin a few holidays over the yaers)...guess it is all about perspective  ;)

thats a swear word in our house.
luckily they've been our of state for a few years now.
this year, they were at my wife's brothers house.
Hear they showed up at 10am, to start drinking and watching football.
by 2pm they were passed out...completely missed the dinner.  Felt bad for my BIL, but he know's ive been there before with them.
glad those days no longer exist fo me and my wife.
we hung out with my parents and had a great time.

Nobody ruined it this year.  MIL does not cook dinners anymore (87 years old).  Spent many years at their house waiting for her to go off about something. Nothing like indigestion for desert. My mom quit cooking dinners several years before her passing due to my sister refusing to help clean up after dinner.  Mom did all the cooking and my wife and I would help set the table and get things ready.  After dinner my sister and her slob husband would retire to the living room where he would promptly fall asleep (after consuming enough food for 3 normal people).  When mom asked for help clearing the table and doing the dishes, my sister replied "Invited guests don't do dishes".   After that we took mom out to dinner on the holidays.  Problem solved.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but my in laws are/were decent, generous, well balanced people.  With the exception of the a$$ my sister-in-law married.  And he's gone.

I set a rule for myself this year, followed it, and it turned out to be the best T-day yet.  The last several years we've done T-Day at our son's house.  Many people come, some relatives, most not.  Someone always ends up acting like a jerk but this year I avoided it.  I simply told my son and his lady that they should not be offended but when the second bottle of wine got opened I was going to leave.  I am just sick of putting up with drunks and won't do it anymore.  They broke out a bottle before dinner, they broke out another bottle after dinner, and I thanked them for a wonderful dinner and left.  And if after I left if they had fist-fights and shot at each other, well, I really don't care.   ::)
