Yes thegabrielj this is how I make my living full time, check out my website       www.dwmsracing.com    or my personal email is    joe@dwmsracing.com
I am a lifelong sohc owner and lover and am here to share information and ideas, I do not want anyone thinking I am here just to advertise but seeing as you asked there is the information!

Scott, You can build it! But if you do not want to attempt to do it I would love to rebuild your engine for you Brother! Ship it to me and I will hook it up for you! I ship almost daily and my website and email is in the message above.

The good news! I am expecting my carbs to be here tomorrow so maybe I can get the new intakes built this weekend!

Thanks for the compliments guys! The engine is going to look so much better when I have time to finish sanding and polishing the covers!

Here is another before and after of the entire engine...

Thanks thegabrielj it is sure worth thinking about. I won't start it until later in the spring if I do it. Allot depends on getting the other bike running, I don't want to be in the riding season with out a bike to ride. I am sure people will help, and in fact Godffery (see august bike of the month thread if you don't know him) and Spikeybike (another BOTM winner) are both close by (Godffrey is 10min and Spikey is about 45min) and I am sure with some cash and beer I could perhaps get them to spend a hour or two here. The bigger issue is I have is few tools and a small space to work in and little time between kids and job etc. So I have not decided yet.. Lots to think about.

Sure man! The block and cylinder head are titanium silver blue painted, the cylinders are flat black painted, the rocker box/valve cover and intakes are painted burnt copper, and the inlay in the engravings I did are the burnt copper as well. The fin edges and top shelf of the top cylinder head fin are polished as well as the end cap on the rocker box and as soon as I get finished sanding on the cam, clutch, and stator covers I am going to polish them to a mirror finish as well.

The intakes in the pic's are not going to be used though I am building some new ones hopefully this weekend.

Delays...delays...the carburetors I had coming were not what I hoped they would be...but that is ok I think I just located an even sweeter set! As soon as I can get them here I can build the intakes and get the pic's up!

The joys of building something custom, hurry up, and wait. ;) :) :)  Looking good joeyputt.

Hurry up and wait, I like that! Well if I was not going to custom build nearly every piece from here on out it would not take long at all to finish but there are a lot of ideas I want to put into this bike...

...and seeing as I already put it out there locally I might as well go ahead and say it here!

I am REVERSE PORTING my 550...CARBS OUT FRONT...EXHAUST OUT BACK!

Not necessarily for performance I just want the cool factor!

Wow, not like you haven't heard this before but your work is amazing. I have my 550 torn down now to replace the rings and valve seals. I'm going to dress the engine up, but just came across your thread because I seem to be having a hard time finding the right paint. I would like to go glossy, like what you have on the crank body and the head.

Where are you finding your paint? I can definitly appreciate all the time you put into this, you must have worn your fingertips off!!

Keep up the great work!

Are you turning the head around? and reverse grinding a cam?

What carbs? and will the pipes be up all the way, or head downward..

I will try to answer your questions without going into too much technical detail.

I will not be turning the head around, I have seen photos of some bikes with the head turned around and know some of the big drag racers turn the head around. I am going for a TRUE reverse port engine where I will leave the head in its stock location.

I returned your message about the paint as well.

Definitely Subscribed!!
Cafe Racing is mainly a matter of taste. It is an atavistic mentality, a peculiar mix of low style, high speed, pure dumbness, and overweening commitment to the Cafe Life and all its dangerous pleasures. I am a Cafe Racer myself, on some days - and it is one of my finest addictions. ~H. S. Thompson~

I am ready to start putting a lot of time in the 550! I got started on the frame and cut it down to the engine cradle. I also cut off all of the tabs that I will not be using and removed the centerstand and the brackets for it.

I will be using the stock neck but I am converting the front of the frame from a double downtube to a single downtube to the ports and double downtube from the ports down to make more room for the carburetors out front. Also from the factory these frames have a sheetmetal backbone from the neck back (under the tank) so I cut this out as well and will be replacing it with tube so the frame will be a full tube chassis.

I set the engine in the cradle today and started working out the exhaust too which I am building now! Here is what the cradle looked like before I set the engine in it.
