I didn't know about the Yamaha. Pretty cool. I'm not sure what doomed the Canondale but it created quite a stir when it first came out.

Before I started building the intake manifolds today I removed all of the exhaust studs, I was worried about snapping one or pulling the threads as they are over thirty years old but they all came out clean in true Honda fashion! I have been working on Honda engines for most of my life and am still impressed daily with the quality of their parts and design!

I recently heard about the yz engine, my family has a lot of kart racing history and a lot of kart racers run a loop in the header like the yz has in that photo.

Very cool Joey.  I was wondering where you were hiding the build thread on this thing.  BTW, this is Kiley from DTT.  I'm the guy that hosted all of those crazy guys at my house during the Barber's festival!  Good to see you here.  Keep it coming man!

Brother 754 I am not sure how many cc's they were feeding.

Brother Kanticoy, I heard that they all had a really good time at Barbers! I have a couple of Brothers that asked me to come over to DTT so I posted this project over there too and on a local forum. It is good to have you here on sohc4!

Here are a few photos of the first intake manifold I built, it proved to be a true test in patience as the ports are facing away from each other. As I wanted a one piece intake I had to design it so that it was able to be installed into and removed from the ports while keeping the proper angles and providing clearance for the inside two bolts, it sounds easy enough however it was very time consuming to design and build.

I still need to do a little welding and smoothing to make the intake look real nice before I paint it burnt copper. The bowl is not on the carburetor in these photos.

I vote for custom frame downtubes that do a loop around the intakes and then tie in a bow before running under the motor.  ;D

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

I am going to put a horseshoe shaped bar at the bottom of the frame to connect the two bottom frame rails with a single downtube from the neck to the horseshoe between the carburetors.

Please, throw in a couple inches of gooseneck, and 8 or 10 degrees of rake, while you are in there..

I don't understand how this is going to run. If the intakes are going to withstand the  heat of hot ex. gasses.   did I miss something? pretty cool though. 8) ???

Brother 754 I am planning on a gooseneck and a little rake.

Brother GSX69bun I am doing internal engine work as well.

I am thinking about going with one large velocity stack on each carburetor instead of running two small ones on each.

I still need to build a plate for the front of the carburetor to mount the stack to but here is what it will look like.

That is just sick and insane and one of the most awesome things I have ever seen. I like the idea of running one velocity stack on each carb instead of two small one for each. Gives it some character. (As if it needed anymore character.)

Two stacks merging into one kind of like a backward exhaust collector would look cool.

Have any pictures of the cam yet? I'm curious how you managed to re-work it.

+1

I have hard welded many shafts and a few cranks and had them turned, never a cam,  would love to see it done, try it. Cams are somthing I have always been told not to mess with.

Cams are not worth trying to modify yourself.. IF, big IF, you can buy what you want..
Once you cant buy it, the game changes.. Be nice if you could start off with a fresh blank, but they may not exist for 550s.

One thing that may work/help, if the base circle is bigger, is the 650 cam..

Without people experimenting with their own cams we would not have  1/2 the cam grinders out there.. (for cars), and would not see accomplishments the likes of Burt Munro...

Sorta reminds me of the local guy that just majorly reworked and changed directions of the ports on a late V-twin engine, with Keihin carbs, that should make between 170-190 hp.. :o

The cam is ready to go I just need to polish it. I have never seen a blank for the 550 but if anyone hears of any let me know I would buy a few if the price was affordable. If there are cams available for your engine I totally agree with Brother 754 just buy one and spend more time on the engine somewhere else as building your own cam requires a lot of time and you will have a hard time building a cam that will outperform one that you can buy, of course there is the happiness of knowing that you built your own!
