How are you going to get the chain to the rear? If you shim it out from the stock position to try and line up with the rear sprocket you will need to do cutouts in the frame....and that area is just stamped...but holds your swingarm axle, and 2 motormounts.

Also if you shim the front sprocket out as far as you are going to need to....isnt that going to put too much force on an already torqued bearing?

I am in a similar position and was thinking about doing a double chain setup. One short chain that comes off of the stock front sprocket location to another doubled sprocket just past the frame. So a 2 chain pully setup, and then you could build your tensioner under the larger rear chain.

I can do a CAD drawing if your interested.

My project has a 180 rear tire.....so yeah, still no chain. I had to bump the front sprocket out from stock about 3/4". The idea I have posted above is what i am working on.

Brother Frankenstuff my chain is going to clear the frame, I have to run the front sprocket out as you mentioned and I am moving the rear sprocket in as well. A friend told me that APE used to sell offset front sprockets for dragbikes but I am not sure if they have one for the 550.

I decided that the exhaust was too long so today I shortened it and I really think it looks a lot better!

Are you concerned about the seat staining and getting nicks? It is pine right? What about if you vacuum formed a nice burl veneer over the laminated pine.  I am not trying to push my ideas on you...just offering some constructive crit. (a Jaguar has a burl veneer...not pine) ;D

The wood is pine, I am going to stain it and clear it, Brother Syscrush mentioned a marine epoxy that sounds like it would offer good protection but I am not familier with burl veneer, what is that?

People have a real emotional reaction with a grain of wood. The right grain gets alot of *WOW* factor.

Joey, the front sprocket that a lot of the 750s have is the same as the 550s.  The CycleX offset sprocket should work fine.

Veneer would not allow the kind of nice burning BroJo has already done on his seat, plus with the curves in the piece it would be extremely difficult even with vacuum forming.

but it is pine. That would be like me telling you 'dont use chromoly for the frame on the bike, you can just buy black pipe in the plumbing section at Home Depot. I am a wood guy. Pine is for good 2X4's and birdfeeders. IMO

Joey, what about if you engraved your logo in the cowl and then backfilled it? Like doing inlay work. It would  POP.

As a wood guy, do you think there's any chance that the seat unit can be protected from cracking?  I've thought a lot about doing some wood pieces on a bike, but my preferred approach would be the cedar strip canoe approach but with thinner strips over a steel frame, then a layer of glass and resin on the outside.

But I'm no expert and I'm looking forward to seeing how BroJo's project works out.

Brother Syscrush cedar would look beautiful, I have some here that I have been saving to make something out of one day.

Brother Frankenstuff you do not have to stop posting your opinions, I value everyones and like to hear them. Cracking has been my main concern from the beginning, pine is grown locally here, just by looking at different woods it does not seem to crack and split as much as a hardwood like oak. There are also a lot of different pieces of furniture, crafts, etc. made out of pine that I have not seen crack.

What is it that you have against pine? A lot of beautiful things are made from pine here in the southeast. I am asking because I value your opinion.

Brother masterchief1112 from the start I knew that I wanted a nice clean one piece exhaust with no clamps so designing it to be removeable was the fun part! Hahahaha! The exhaust system goes in from the rear of the main frame section, I turn the exhaust system so that it is pointing out to the right hand side of the bike, then I put the right front corner of the header in between the rear frame rails, I put the curve about half way back on the right side of the header over to the right rear frame rail and roll it right in! To take the exhaust in or out of the frame the only thing I have to remove is the spacer on the left rear top side engine mount and it clears!

Are you going to put a heat shield on the bottom of the seat?

Brother BlindJoe I am going going to skin the bottom of the entire tail section with a piece of polished aluminum, I may run an additional protectant behind the aluminum as well, I found out today from another Brother that bronze would actually be more heat resistant so I may use it and it would add more color as well. I am going to recess the bottom of the tail section so that I can countersink the aluminum or bronze so that it will be flush.

That sounds awesome, you could also possibly glue some type of heat resistant cloth between the plate and wood.

. and just to take Franken's idea and run with it. .. i think you should put a cut out in the cowl of your logo and make it the taillight

Brothers thank you all for sharing your ideas! I really appreciate it!

Brother Spikeybike I think I am going to use the bronze, it would look really nice polished and would add more color. I was originally going to sink a small bullet tail light into the end of the tail section but now I am not really sure and the tag mount is going to be a challenge as I really want to keep this bike as clean as possible.

I have decided to paint the frame and tank a deep red wine color with copper accents, I really think that the wine, copper, and wood will all look nice togethor, what do you all think?

License plates and mirrors are a pain in the arse to incorporate into a build successfully. That’s why so many bikes have them off for photos, but it is a reality to consider if possibly. I just don’t see how you incorporate the colors of a license plate into the rich warmth of a wine/copper scheme.

Your colors scheme sounds perfect to me Brother Joey. Can’t wait to see a sample.

Brother FunJimmy I have been working hard lately towards getting all of the framework done so that I can paint it, I want to get back to work on finishing the engine but I needed it in the frame to finish designing the exhaust, I wanted to finish the exhaust so that I know where I want my exhaust mount on the frame and I needed to build the seat so that I could get the angle of the exhaust, for every one piece want to build I have to start other pieces so that I can get the angles and measurements that I want. I only have a few other small things that I need the engine in the frame to do so once I get them built and welded on the frame I can go ahead and take the engine out and finish the frame and the engine.

Sorry about the long post, my intention was just to say I want to work towards getting the frame done so that I can paint it! Hahahaha!

I agree tags and mirrors are a challenge, especially for me as I like things really clean. I did not know it until I saw one last night but my state does offer a vintage vehicle tag that is white with beautiful red wine colored designs in the two top corners and a very nice matching colored vintage vehicle script across the bottom, it also has a shadow of a motorcycle behind the tag numbers so I am going to check and see if I can get one of those...now if I can just decide where I am going to put it on the bike!
