'79 CB650 ON THE ROAD AT LAST!!!!
« on: November 27, 2010, 04:39:13 AM »
I picked up this bike a few months ago and it is currently going through a complete resto, it is currently in the process of being rebuilt after having the frame painted, I only have the origional pics of it from when I first bought it, but I will take some more in the next couple of days and post them up.

Ok, in these couple of photos there is the freshly painted frame, with the tree reattached and handlebars sitting in place.  Also there is the engine which has been painted satin black, I just have to finish polishing the bits that are unpainted, and there is one of my forks which I polished, took about 6hrs to polish this one fork.  Once I have finished polishing the alloy then I have to repaint the inlays in the polished parts, then finally the engine will be ready to refit. So far I have spent about 35hrs in just polishing alloy, and I have about the same left to go. :-\

Looking good.

I have a 1982 650 that I bought for the motor, forks & brakes.

If there's any bits that might help give a shout, I'm in redcliffe.

Cheers

I might be interested in the whole lot depending on the price, and what is left, send us some pics of what you have, I'm looking for a few things, exhaust is one, and a few other bits and pieces, I have actually been looking for a donor bike, something with a blown motor or the likes, but there just don't seem to be any in Australia

I thought it was time I put up a progress report, not a lot has been happening the past few months, work has been getting in the way, The old girl is starting to look like a bike again, it is well on its way to being reassembled.  I still have a fair bit of polishing to do, the side covers, tank and the trim that goes in front of the rear light are all getting painted this week, fingers crossed, been waiting for months for my old man to get the time, I finished the rust and dent repairs on the tank today, my first go at lead wiping, didn't turn out too bad, did take a couple of goes (and an unhealthy quantity of lead ingested I'm sure too) to get it right though. I also wired up the new guages over the weekend, but they haven't been fitted as yet.  Next on the list is to get the front brakes sorted out, my calipers are shot, I've tracked down a set off of a CX500 which bolt straight on, and look better than the stock ones too.  I figure it is time to start pouring some money into the old girl and get it done, I am nearly 6 months overdue on the finish date I set myself when I started this project, my new plan is to have it on the road by my birthday which is in October, hopefully this time I can get it done in time.   :D

Paint looks very nice.

The 1982 is a fair bit different than yours, not sure how many bits would be interchangeable.

Not parting with the exhaust @ the moment sorry.

Thanks, it turned out alright, considering we were rushed for time and it was painted outside, we were racing the chill of the afternoon, and only just got it done in time, that finish is how it came off of the gun, after it dried. I am actually after a donor bike/ next project, my next project will be a cafe style bike, just gotta find a starting point for it, and I would love to be able to base it on a 650.

On the 650 site some one is selling nos 4-2 for 80-82.  A little diff then the stock 79 but close.  I like the 80-82 better anyway.

Ok the old girl is on the road finally, in the last 4 days I have put nearly 300 km on the clock, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, still waiting on a new exhaust to be made, hopefully won't be long now, because mine keeps going to holes. I have been wanting to get a decent photo of the old girl for the past week, but every day I'm not home before dark, so I snapped a quick one of her in her stable when I got home tonight.

True Blue, I'm in the process of prepping my 79 CB650 for paint.  I'm curious about the little ring around the gas cap.  How did you paint that?  A friend told me to paint it heavy, and allow paint too run under the little bits, the pour the paint out, let dry then sand it all out and re-coat it.  ??

All I can say to that process is Yuck, I painted mine with the fuel cap removed and I just carefully masked over the hole and trimmed it at the outside of where the gasket for the fuel cap sits, if you look closely at this photo you can see where the masking tape is.
