RC166/181 Hailwood Four replica
« on: November 28, 2010, 10:59:13 PM »
I'm beginning work on a CB500-based race replica for a customer here in Portland. He spends 11 months of the year working in China, and is here for prime riding season in the summer. We've decided on a 2 year timeline, shooting for a mockup when he's here next summer. This should be fun, and I plan on documenting the build here. Anyway, here's the plan as it stands now:

CHASSIS
-1971 CB500 frame
-Grimeca 4LS front hub
-18" Excel alloy rims, WM2 front WM4 rear
-Progressive rear shocks
-Race tech cartridge emulators
-Frame braced and modified to fit RC bodywork
-Tarrozzi rear sets and clips-ons

ENGINE: CB550/650 engine, 762cc
-CB550 cases
-CB650 crank
-CB650 rods, shotpeened
-CB650 cylinder block
-CB900 DOHC sleeves, modified
-CB650 head, ported
-CB550 trans, undercut
-CB650 primary-clutch gearing
-Megacycle 126-21 camshaft
-Kibblewhite HD valve springs
-OS intake valves
-66mm pistons, 10.5/1 CR
-Keihin CR29 carbs
-Dyna 2000 ignition

There are lots of details to be ironed out as we go... exhaust, lighting, etc., but this is the gist of the project as it stands. The wheel parts are on order, and the engines are being torn down and inspected now. The trans is en route to FBG for undercutting, and Soos is working on the pistons/liners. I'll have pics as soon as I have something worth showing. For now, this is what we're going for:

Somewhere between this (RC166):

and this (RC181):

Will make an intersting read Paulages - I'm well on with starting my own RC163 replica 250-4 so there will be some similarities with our builds albeit a big difference in the engine department. Sadly money has stopped me making any progress these last few weeks and might wait until the new year so this will be good inspiration for me, bring it on ;)

Yours is based on a CBR250RR? If so, that is a really great platform for an RC166 replica. We'll have to lean more towards the RC181 with the larger CB500 platform, but there are elements of the smaller 6 we'd like to incorporate.

That's the one - CBR250-RR with tuning, I need to get 20,000 rpm just to, errr, well, just because that's what I want ;D
Should be good projects side by side I think...

Brian - what do you mean what's happenig to the hy-vo? If you mean the CR750, it's in having major surgery for the winter to install new ignition, carb sync stubs and bash the exhaust in so the chain clears it on the over run! It seems the build never stops  :D

Yeah Colin's 500 is gorgeous - it has some of the best stickers I've ever seen on a replica too  ;D

Sam - yeah but not far. Far enough to pick the faults and annoy the neighbours but no further LOL

Should make things a bit clearer.....

The pistons on top are cb550 G.E. pistons.
Starting laft to right in the front row:
cb650 stocker, 66mm high domed, 66mm low dome, 66mm low dome.

Looks like you have quite the project ahead of you!!

Wasn't too sure I would make it here again at one point.
As long as my heart doesn't give out any time soon, I should be able to hang around for some time to come.

Soos, what does CB550 G.E. mean (grand edition, garden egrets, good enough??)

"Gentleman's Express," which references an article from the '70s (kicking around this site somewhere) describing a bike that used 61mm CB750 pistons cut down to fit the 550, making a high compression 590 kit. The article gave exact piston-mod specs, which Soos has reproduced for a few people.

Ah! Very nice, remember that article well, great inspiration. Jewel Hendricks built a similar machine to the G.E. that ran the 1/4 mile in the 12's or low 13's in California and I believe he later was involved in "The Mantlepiece". A lot of great history surrounds the CB500/550. Seems like you just might be creating some new legends with your hybrid and the Hailwood replica.

And yes they are out of KZ750's, both the low and high dome.
