Topic: Machinist In Bay area, or someone with machine equipment?

Hey, I'm about to start moving foward with my 550 build. I'm starting with stock 650 pistons, but need machine work. If someone knows a good machine shop, or someone with an old bridgeport in good working order that wouldn't mind making a friend and letting me use it, i'd show up with food-beer-or money if you're not interested in a friend and just for buisness. I'd also need someone to do the cylender ore.

How do you plan on using 650 pistons in a 550?  Are you using a 650 head?

JP Morgen at Morgen Machining is my go-to guy.  If he can't bore the cylinders (small cylinders need non-typical equipment), then you might try Lonnie Jensen Company.  If they can't do it, then go to Engine Dynamics in Petaluma.  They can definitely bore that block for you, but are a little expensive and far away.

There's a guy on this forum in Virginia who will bore them too.  He charged me $180 a while back for a 466 kit bore on a 400F.  I can't remember his contact info right now though.

I am either going to use a 650 head, or mill the pistons down and cut reliefs for the valves. Wichever one happens first I guess.

I might be totally wrong about this, but I imagine that the 650 piston is rather domed, and you would have to take off a lot of material to get it to fit in a 550 head.

If you are going to mill pistons down I think the 750 flat top piston would probably be easier.

I go to Petaluma twice a week for work if you need someone to run the cylinder up there.

You can send it over to APE to have them do machine work. They charge $189 to bore out our cylinders.
