We've all seen incredibly bad advice given on various Internet sites, but now and then you run across one that bears examination with the Darwin Awards in mind.  So what's the dumbest advice you've ever seen given?  I'll start.

On a recreational boating site a couple of years ago a question was asked about preparing a hull for paint.  Sanding a boat hull can be quite a chore and owner's are always looking for an easier way  Because this was a pretty boat the guy was wanting to prep it much like a car and that meant even more sanding, wet sanding in the final passes.  So the guy asked if there was a best way to do it and got the usual answers about grades of paper and sanding blocks and using soap in the water and all of that sort of thing.  Then a guy came along and said he could sand that hull in not time at all.  He just used his regular dual action sander - electric - and stuck wet or dry paper on it and then ran a hose on it while he sanded.  He justified this attempted self-aniliation by saying the circuit had a GFI breaker on it anyway and it would trip before he even felt the shock.  He recommended everyone try it.

That is precisely why I like to listen to my boom box as it teeters on the edge of my bathtub during a nice hot bath after a long days work.  Also why I wait until a torrential downpore to fire up the electric weed eater and trim my yard.  Everyone should try it.  It works great!!!   ::)

Not exactly bad advice, but someone given advice and then refusing to listen to it. In a boating building forum(weird, eh?) a new guy started asking questions about building a sailboat.  Questions that shouldn't have need be asked if he knew anything about boats in general.  Claimed to be a teacher.  Our first suggestions were to take a sailing class, read some books on building, and buy a set of plans.  He was thinking otherwise.  He had already started building a boat of his own design, but needed to know where to put the keel. (For you non sailing types, the keel is pretty important in a sailboat), and if he had ever even been in a sailboat, he might have a clue as to where it needed to be and even what it does.  He further claimed that he was going to learn to sail in this boat he was building.  To this day, we're not sure why a teacher was so against learning, especially where lives might be endangered.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

I once said to a teacher who made an ass out of himself by sending my son home for something he didn't do {didn't even know how to do it}, "you have been making decisions for children for so long, you are now making childish decisions"...... ;D  He just looked at me with his mouth open...... ;)

when i was so much younger and more naive (hehe) I remember working at a boatyard drilling holes on these steel support beams using a huge hand held drill. I would sit on this steel mini barge tied to the end of the support with the extension cord floating in between...  after a couple weeks one of the guy's said "oh, you should use this circuit breaker too". I had just figured that since the cord was in ok shape I would be careful about not dropping the drill (as it torqued and jammed into the steel i was drilling).

Not bad advice but a good boat story and any story you can learn from is sage advice.
A Professor friend of mine built a wooden two-person ocean kayak by hand.  On the maiden voyage he and a friend (not me) went about two miles off the coast of Cape May in New Jersey near the rips.  The boat dissolved around him and his buddy as he used Titebond glue to fasten the strips while building the boat.  It disintegrated and they found themselves drifting into the shipping lanes (which are not that far off the coast)  They finally flagged a small boat down who wouldn't let them aboard because they thought they were some sort of refugees since he is Cuban.  The rest of the story is a bit foggy as I was laughing my ass off at this point.  He was a law professor at a very prominent university.

I am a member on another site.  I had trouble syncing the carbs.  I had some advice with posts but then this PM came to me.  I followed what was said to do and it tottally messed up the sync I had it at.  It took me a couple days to get it back to where I was.  Those carbs on my Venture must be the worst design ever!  So, after messing with those things, the carbs on the Honda are a dream!   ;D
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

a guy was winterizing his trailer by putting anti freeze in the fresh water tank
and then pumping it out to all the other systems to winterize them
i asked him how he got rid of the antifreeze in the fresh water tank
because antifreeze in your drinking water is not a good thing
never got an answer back

In his defense, there are potable water system anti-freeze solutions.  We would use them in the boat yard right around this time of the year.  They are pink or red.  They taste pretty good and go well with chicken, tofu and baked alaska, etc...... :P
