Topic: Tonight's Noob Question: Battery Leaking

My battery seems to be boiling over. I am assuming the bike did it before I bought it, as there were spots on my exhaust. The liquid level looks a little low, but I havent added any water to it. Its blown off a few of the plastic caps. I know nothing about electronics, but I have checked with my multimeter and the current seems to match up with what it should be.

So far, I have read that it might be a bad battery, or a bad regulator.

I just got some new to me 4-1 pipes and they already have a splash of battery acid on them that has tarnished the chrome, so any advice is appreciated.

I have considered just buying a sealed battery, but I dont know if it might just explode if its being over charged? Another forum post said a sealed batter worked out but I wanted the collected experience of the sohc4 forum before I made a move.

Prolly regulator.

Using your multi-meter, take voltage readings at the battery under the following conditions:

- Bike off
- bike running at idle (1000 - 1200 RPM)
- 2000 RPM
- 3000 RPM
- 4000 RPM
- 5000 RPM

Try oven cleaner on the pipes, but to be honest there's not much hope if the acid has already etched the metal.  You do need to fix the over-charging problem before you get a new battery; no reason to ruin two of them.
