Another POD question - Not how but which
« on: December 01, 2010, 12:53:48 PM »
ok so i don't want to start a pod vs stock debate i just wanted to know which pods you all seem to like best.  i have a stock box, but wanted to see if I can pods working since i have the time right now and if not, i got the stock box

so the question for the guys running pods which do you recommend?  i see uni's, k&n's, and many others and all ranges of prices.  I'm looking for something that is pretty sturdy and wont' take a ton of effort to maintain.

thanks in advance, by the way putting these on a 76 550F, don't know my jet size yet, but working on one thing at a time.

Emgo, $8.00 each, some charge more, can be found for less.  I have used 72 of them with no issues.

I sprung for the K&N filters on my 400/4.  I had no trouble tuning it.  Had the Emgos on a 750/4 and I did not like the quality.

I have emgo's on my 400f. Poor quality compared to k&n but they do the job.You get what you pay for.

im using the emgos in my 500, had to modify them to fit though... not enough space between the frame and the carb. k&n makes one thats small enough, but last i checked it was like $175 for the set. id get the k&ns if i had the money, but since i dont...

I use emgos found here http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/pod_filters.htm

For my 75 CB550 and have ridden it to Mexico and back with them on. It still runs like a champ!

I recently upgraded from emgo to K&N.  The difference is pretty noticeable - smoother acceleration and stronger running overall.  My emgos were about a 2 years old though, and on a bike that gets ridden.  Emgos are not serviceable like the K&Ns, so once they get old, you just have to replace them.

Does anyone have part numbers for the K&Ns that work?  From the reading I have done while searching for essentially the same information it appeared that the Emgo's were the only ones that would fit without hitting the center support tubes on the frames of 500/550 bikes.  I would prefer to have user-servicable pods on my bike and am well willing to pay whatever extra K&N's might cost, particularly if they are also seemingly better made.

There is another filter I'm much interested in too, and not to high-jack the thread but it too may be pertinent to others here, I've see small matching filters used by some of the project bikes on the breather at the top center of the head, the line that used to run to the air-box.  Does anyone know a part number or supplier of the appropriate size little filter to plug that hole?

k&n part # rc-0844 sold on their site for $194, but i've seen them cheaper. and for the record the emgos are not a bolt on fit, they are still too long... i did things others despise to mine to make em fit.  :-\ hasnt affected anything as far as i can tell...oh and with my 500 the choke lever had to be trimmed in order to fully close

Just do a search for a crankcase breather filter. They can be had for a few bucks on a number of parts sites. Universal fit.
