lost nut/ cam chain too tight
« on: March 17, 2006, 08:41:21 AM »
the other day I was trying to disassemble the engin for maintanence, prep for media blasting and paint. while I was doing this a nut fell through one of the holes in the rocker arm cover and fell  in to the engine. I think it must have fallen in to where the lower cam chain sprocket is or at least some where down there, because now as I am trying to take out the cam I just cann't fine enough slack in the chain to raise the cam enough to clear the sprocket.  I followed the instructions on the manual the tentioner is not appling pressure and everythng seems fine but I just cann't figure it out.  Now if it is the nut that is down there how do I fish it out the space is way too small I cannot even see down there.  I was thinking of hanging the engine upside down and moving the chain, maybe then gravity and the movement will dislodge it, if it is really stuck I was wondering how hard is it to break the chain and where I can find a new one.

Did you unbolt the sprocket , move it sideways and remove chain?

push sprocket sideways off the mounting boss, if neceessary rotate slightly so the cutaway to clear cam lobe is lined up with cam centre then lift chain towards the mounting boss on camshaft. then you can tilt cam and sprocket and slide it through chain. may be easier if you adjust chain to full slack, undo the adjuster nut on cylinder and push down on top of adjuster , lock nut back up and it holds blade straight
