CAM type and setting HELP!
« on: December 02, 2010, 01:08:43 pm »
Shes a beauty isnt she? $200 with an unseized motor, title and good frame. She was 24 hours from being junked...and that will be my response to all those puritans out there as I build this into my own style Cafe Racer, guilt free.

Every one seems to think she is called "Holy Moly" for some reason because thats what everyone whos seen her says first...with that said I have already purchased nearly all my parts and have been polishing, grinding, cutting and hammering for a few weeks now and expect good progress over the next couple of months! will be powder coating rims and frame next week.

A leaky engine is a good sign!  It means someone kept fluids in it!   :D

I'd hang that tank on the wall just as a keep sake.

Dude, that gas tank gave me an idea.  A GLOVE BOX!

Heck, we don't need all that space in the tank for gas.  ;D
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

A little update is: The frame and a few bits and bobs are all now back from powder coating. I went with Metalic silver with gloss black rims.  Clocks are done, hubs, carbs and seat is just back from upholstery and I have all my new parts piled up for the rebuild. Here are some shinny bits!

More pics, The tank obviously needs a lot more work...I have one of the AC Cobra type, or speedboat type racing gas caps, thats why I cut away the existing seam gas cap rim. The front hub I finally decided to paint the inside gloss black to match the back thinking it would be a bear to try and clean as soon as the shine fades. So im working on that now.

I think it's great that someone bought that bike.  I saw it on CL for some charity, put it up ion here and it got blasted.  There were some cool parts I thought.  My bike had a title and less parts when I bought it, for $420 in IE.  Keep up the good work man.

Hey guys, Thanks for the encouragement and yes this bike was on CL for $650 being sold by a local charity.
I emailed them and asked if the motor was seized and were they open to offers?

They did not respond then about a month later I get an email saying it is being junked tomorrow come and get it for $300. I responded can you go any lower and he responded OK $200.00 come get it!

For anyone that is interested, I wanted to find out more of the history of this bike.
I tracked down the previous owner to the LA area and gave him a call, he picked up the phone and said that's right I did own a 1976 CB750F blah blah. He didn't seem to happy about being bothered but after using a bit of my Cockney charm he came around and told me about the bike.

He said today he is 48 years old but he bought the bike when he was 22 years old going to college and working 3 jobs. He saved his money for it and bought it from his buddy who was into drag racing, hence the rear sets, 811 kit, double chain, pods and a 4 into one pipe.

The bike was his sole form of transportation and he loved it! The only problem being were the neighbors would complain about being woken up in the early hours to the sound of him taking off to work. Because of this he would coast the bike down the hill he lived at the top of. One morning he was screwing around coasting slalom down the hill in the early hours and got to close to the curb and smashed the Stator cover against the curb causing the oil to pour out. He pushed the bike back up the hill and that was that. That was 1984 the same year as the tags still on the bike.

The owner told me the stator cover was very expensive and so he put it on hold until the summer. The summer came and went and the years slowly started to roll by. Eventually getting married and raising kids, still with the intention of getting the bike running.

2010 comes by and he is 48 years old and his wife makes him finally realize the bike will never be fixed so he lists it on LA Craigs list for $650. He gets a call from a prospective buyer asking if the bike is seized? The buyer says if it is not seized he will pay $500. cash for it. The seller agrees but when the buyer shows up they cannot get any movement out of the kickstart so the buyer says its seized and no good to him and does not buy the bike.

The owners wife then convinces him to give it to charity and get the tax right off which he reluctantly does.

There I am dream shopping on Craigs list and I come across this bike for sale by the charity, asking price $650.
After negotiating her for $200 I drive up there and cross my fingers, pop her into neutral, put my foot on the kickstart and I feel those lovely pistons in motion as the kickstart comes down.

Music to my ears. So I guess the bike was meant to be mine, I have no idea why they thought it was seized, it must of been in gear for them. Lucky for me and I'm going to give her a new life and turn her into a beautiful Cafe racer.

It is really nice to know the history of a bike, especially when you put a piece of yourself into the project.  I got my first bike at 16 years old the first day I was legal to ride on the road in London, that was 1984 and I remember it like it was yesterday. Ironically the same year and spring this CB750 was parked on the side of the house left there to wait for me to come along for 26 years!

I will post some more pics!

I just got the frame and rims etc back fom powdercoat. The pictures do not do it justice at all. The frame is a metalic silver and the camera is not really capturing the shine/sparkle... I was not aware that it would be clear coated. Aparently they need to clear coat over metalic with powdercoat.  Very happy I went Metalic on this bike.

As you can see I cut out the rear brackets and I cut the lower bracket and rear brake bracket. It was not my first choice but  the exhaust needed the clearance and I loved the exhaust more than I loved the bracket. Anyway when I mocked it all up it looked fine and the part left on the bracket supports the brake bracket so thats why I cut it that way.

Wheels are obviously black gloss with the rear being a 16" x 4" Harley Panhead rim I picked up on Ebay for $16.00
The tires I have, I got them on special Bridegestone R11's, the rear is a 140/90/16 with raised white lettering..A little bigger than I wanted but it will work out OK.

Im also an English short ass so the bike is going to sit real low!

OK, Just got my rotors back from being drilled and I also have all my stainless steel lines ready too . Im switching to two rotors up front so I just duplicated a second brake set.
I need to paint them and clean them up so they look real nice. I will either go with the gloss black or metalic silver centers.

Going through the board it apears a lot of people change the front master cylinder to a GL1000 or larger/newer set up. I found out by good sources ie. Hondaman and Carpy that it is not necessary, as the stock master cylinder can handle the twin rotors. Aparently there is a ever so slightly more play in the brake lever but the extra braking more than compensates. So therefor im in the process of polishing out the master cylinders and calipers......Just thought I would put that out there for those of you that are going with the twin rotors on the CB750F.

Love those gauges! They look very similar to ones I designed, which may be why.

Where did you get the clamps on the bottom that seal them?

The faces I bought on Ebay.....Maybe you sold them to me. The clamps, I believe they came with the chrome gauge cups,...if I remember rightly. After cutting the existing gauge wrings with the dremel I realized it would of been a nightmare JB Welding the original rings back on, But the chrome rings hold everything in place and I can get access if I need to.

The mistake I made with the vinyl gauge covers is I placed them on top of the original green face. The problem being is that when Honda made the faces they stamped them leaving a small depression that can be seen as a shadow effect on the vinyl. Its not bad but if you tilt the gauges you can see the shadowing/depression under the vinyl......I'm not sure if I can live with it or not because it may bug me too much.....In hind sight I should have flipped over the green faces and applied the vinyl to the back side.....oh well!

On the cases I used VHT high heat Wrinkle finish, All the covers are finned as seen in the picture with the finned edges now polished. The sprockets, side cases and oil filter etc I have are all chrome pieces that match the valve cover. So I'm thinking the chrome pieces will pop nicely against the silver frame, dull wrinkle and black.  The bike is going to be Vanila white..The same off white you see on the Range rover or Chrysler 300. I have silver and black chequered flag 3" stripe for good luck cafe from the UK... front to back that match the frame and engine silver.
Decals are the same marching silver and black.  The chrome obviously is not typical for a Cafe bike but I wanted a little flash of chrome against the black/silver/vanilla.  I call this bike a cafe and I suppose it is for the most part but I am just doing my own twist of what I like by adding chrome...I guess that's the fun part just doing whatever you want to do to suit your own taste. It may look really nice...or terrible we will see.

Thanks!..VHT wrinkle plus..it is a bedliner type paint and is chemical resistant...seems really durable and is a different look. I noticed "Carpy" is using it on one of his new builds also...see below...
