Ok, I'm doing a pretty lousy job on the updates but I am making progress. My parts are being painted by "Paint By Smokey" in San Clemente and will be finished on Tuesday and I will post the pics by Wednesday. Everything is pretty much ready for assembly.  Front forks are done with progressive springs and painted black.  Brakes, Calipers. You name it is new or rebuilt. Although I showed pictures of my clocks earlier. I was not 100% happy with the white clock faces so I switched them out to Silver faces with Black needles and I replaced the inner bulbs with flexible LED rubber strip lights that are super bright and the cost was about $7.00. Great tip from someone here on the forum.

Here are some parts painted and ready for assembly. I used VHT Caliper paint with high temperature clear. I must of painted some of these parts 3 times and wasted a lot of money on VHT paint. I'm not a painter and it was a bit of a leaning curve to get a quality I could live with....The mistake I made was painting the to thick and I was getting chipping.  Also underestimating how soft the paint is during even after oven curing.

I was supposed to start assembling my motor today but I got side tracked to setting up my bars and clocks etc.
...wanted to see how it was all going to come together. I bought Clip ons but then had another change of heart and went with the Norman Hyde M bars. Engine next..

Following is a bunch of pics. Good day today as I got my parts back from the painter and I think he did a quality job. Also my motor is ready for the head to be installed so I'm pretty happy about that too. This motor is bored to 811cc It was done back in 1982 and as far as I know only has about 5000 miles on the rebuild. The PO told me it was a drag bike back in the 1970's...?  I thought he meant it was dragged along behind his truck...I'm not sure I'm seeing a drag bike there...lol.

I replaced the rings, primary and cam chains, Ape studs, new chain rollers, oil seals, had the head machined and that's about it on the motor. Let me know what you guys think. Also I'm a Britt living in CA so that's why I went with chequers...its a good luck thing for us....its an old Britt thing.

Fresh from the paint shop today...decided to expose the F Oil tank and dress it up a bit and then went with braided Oil lines too.

Hind sight being 20/20 the Cafe Racer tank decal looks a little small or lost on the big ol K tank. It looks way better in person. Initially I didn't want a cheesy big Cafe logo and on the mock up it looked OK against primer. Perhaps it would of looked much better larger. Too late now!

wow - great build.  Love the white.    Gotta say - I'm in love with the clutch cover.  Might have to steal that idea.

Thanks guys! The clutch cover picture is from one of Carpy'd builds, I was just showing the VHT wrinkle finish which I'm very glad I went with it seems very durable and forgiving.  The covers I am using are all the NOS finned covers from the 70's I managed to eek out the whole set piece by piece and did the black with polished fins.

I see a future BTM nominee here.

If I were to build a cafe for myself it would have to have the checkered strip too. I really love that look.

Thanks BikerDanny really appreciate that. The thing with the chequers is not to go completely mad with them....apparently it takes some constraint...lol. I think I'm at the edge with the enamel chequer badges so that's it for the bike chequers...I'm happy they came out the way they did.

A bit of a bad day today and my lack of experience kicked me in the butt. The bike has the 811cc big bore kit and I knew it only had a few thousand miles on the rebuild so all I had to do was replace the rings. I replaced the chains, rollers etc etc. But I noticed when lowering the cylinder block over the last piston it became very tight on that last piston so I used my rubber mallet to work it all the way down. The pistons would all move up and down smoothly yet that last piston seemed so tight in the cylinder it wanted to push the cylinder block up as it was so tight in there.  I was just going to put the head on and it bugged me too much thinking something wasn't right so I did a redo only to find everything looked fine but still it was super tight getting to the last oil ring.....the second time around I snapped the ring, again working on that last cylinder.  I compressed it to tight with my clamp and it broke.  Anyway finding those 64mm CB350 piston rings with 3 part oil ring is a pain in the butt. I found a set and ordered it but it will set me back a few days. Should not of messed with it....I was just secondguessing what ifs?.......Is it normal to have a piston or two so tight when replacing rings?

so I moved on to assembling the head light, running lights/turn signals. not sure how this looks I may be a bit off using this style, I thought I would see how it looks. Question if anyone knows if I can just change out these bulbs to dual filament and be able to use them as turn signals and running lights. At the moment they seem quite bright as running lights....any ideas appreciated....or keep them as they are?

I dig the style of that setup, looks very vintage cool.  If you want to add a running light, you will need to have a second wire in there along with a bulb base that has the second circuit.  If you look down into the base, there would be 2 points where the bulb will contact on the bottom.  If there is only one, then you need a new base with the second power connection. The return/negative being the side of the bulb/base.  It shouldn't be too hars to find these and you could probably rob the ones out of the old rear signals, but might not be worth the work.

Thanks, Hapakev...I need to look  into that because I have a low brow custom license plate Stop light running light that sits on one side and these South Orange County nut case aggressive drivers make me think I need additional rear running lights to stop some cell phone using soccer mum plowing into the back of me in her SUV.   Maybe I will also look into those "Magic Blinkers"...have you seen them? They make your lights work as running lights and blinkers. I think they are about $30.00. I would need to make my tail lights small Red LED because of the power draw as I have a front Halogen as well so  I will look into the options. Thanks for the info.

Haha, i hear ya.  These OC drivers are about as bad as they come.  I have been wanting to add a H4 halogen light also, but am worried about the amp draw as well.  I am running incandescent bulb blinkers too, but I may just throw one on and see.   I definitely want to be seen, even if it means throwing on a trickle charge between rides.

I am nearly finished with the motor....hopefully the missus will help me drag it off the bench tomorrow...onto a pile of empty cardboard boxes...lol...then I can start pulling my hair out trying to wrangle it into the frame. My thinking is laying the motor on its side on blankets and quilts and lower my pre-wrapped frame over it and work it in that way.....not looking forward to it one bit!...but it is progress!
