Paint Job Progress
« on: December 03, 2010, 07:00:30 PM »
So I thought I would post some pics of my progress on my 1976 CB550K. I've been apinting the tank and sidecovers and so far it's starting to look pretty good if I say so myself. I'm hoping to have this bike looking good for spring.
First it was stripping the tank. The black area didn't want to come off with stripper but lot's of sanding did the trick. Next the bondo to fill a dent and a few dings. Etching primer, then filler primer sanded smooth. Spray adhesion for the plastic covers as primer. Next for color I went to NAPA and found premixed ready to paint laquer from Duplicolor and a Preval. I have to say next time I think I would just use spray can for the same results but cheaper. 3 preval units and a quart of paint cost $40 rattle can would cost $25. Live and learn. I bought a 750 striping kit from a member I had to trim it a bit but it turned out looking like original decals. And that's where I am at this point. Next up will be Spraymax2000 clearcoat. Here are some pics.

Yeah I like white. I wasn't sure if I should paint the black insert but I left it white for now.

black insert?

I think he means the section surrounding the emblem.  It's left white in the later pictures, whereas it was black originally there.

Inside the decal is black for the OEM paint scheme.

ARRGGHHH!!! FRUSTRATION!!!

Friggin dust! I can't get rid of it. I'm working in a small 5' x 8' visqueen room, I've taken precaution to keep it clean. I'm using lint free rags but everytime I tack wash it with alcohol or acetone dust always finds it's way to my paint job. This morning I was ready to clearcoat and after fighting dust I looked the tank over good and no dust. I spray a coat of clear on and it looks like I rolled the tank on a dusty carpet. I couldn't believe it. I don't even know where this dust is coming from. This is the biggest reason I will take the tank out to have painted professionally. I've been fighting dust at every step of the paint process. I'm pulling my hair out at this point. I guess I'll be sanding it agian once this coat dries.

Just venting.  :P

I'm no painter but a friend of mine is and he builds the visqueen room and then right before he sprays the paint he takes a hose in there with a nozzle on it and mists the walls and the floor with water. With the surrounding area damp he can paint without stirring up dust. Just a thought. The real painters may have a better idea.

Your parts look great! If you get a little dust in it you can 1500 sand the clear and buff it with 3M and it will look like glass! You may already know this but I just thought I would offer in case you did not. Seriously though I love the white! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the words of encouragement and the comliments joey. I did a little spot sanding and respraying clear coat. I think I got it. Next up will be the fine sanding and polishing. What 3m product do you use? I've heard the anti-swirling polishing compound works good.

Yes the swirl polish works well, do you have an automotive paint supply or body shop supply close to you? They normally stock various 3m compounds and could probably tell you better than I could the best one to use with your brand of clear, I have used the general compound and the swirl they definately both worked great! My brother is actually a better automotive painter than I am (I do more of the engine paint) let me ask him what he recommends.

Cool. My clearcoat is Spraymax 2000 2 part. It is surprisingly easy to work with inspite of the freakin dust. I'll have some more pics up soon with the tank and covers on the bike.

a window fan with a filter helps cut down on the dust. Dirt nibs are to be expected when painting in yer garage though. if you or someone you know has a high speed buffer you can still make it look like glass as long as you put on enough clear. runs can be carefully shaved down with a single edge razorblade ( tape the corners ) , then wetsanded a little bit with 1500 grit (use a block on runs and other large imperfections). dirt nibs will sand out with 2000 grit. orange peel should be blocked down with 2000 grit. finish everything with 3000 grit and you'll barely have to buff it to a beautiful shine. remember to keep your paper very clean as well as the paint surface, continuously spraying both with water. Dry the paint surface often to make sure you are sanding out the larger grit scratched rather than gouging debris into the fresh paint, making it look worse. white looks good buffed out with just rubbing compound, black takes 3 consistencies of compound to look good in the sun with no streaks.

In body shops, with high dollar downdraft paint booths, they still get dirt nibs in the paint.

Most 2 pac products are fine with fuel. We use a lot of 2 pac products at work and they are pretty tough. You can also get some really good industrial clears that have strong UV resisters in them, most are marine grade and very tough....
