I went and did it (NC)
« on: December 03, 2010, 08:09:25 PM »
Well, I took the plunge.  I went out and found a K4 that's in need of a little TLC and brought her home.

A little background... when I was a kid in the mid 70's, my dad had a CB750 (not sure of the exact year, but I think it was a '75 or '76) and my mom rode a CL200.  I was around 6 or 7 years old.  I'm pretty sure my dad's 750 was gold (but I wouldn't swear to it), but unfortunately, he's no longer around to ask.  My mom's 200 was blue.  She had her bike stolen.  The thieves stripped it down, and beat the snot out of it on some off road trails totaling it.  Not long afterwards, my dad ended up selling his 750.  From that point in my life, I always had a place in my heart for the early CB750's.  I had an uncle who was into HD's, but I never really could get in to them.  It was always the Hondas.

Back to present day... I found a '74 on Craigslist and decided to pull the trigger.  And before anyone asks, yes, I'm sure I paid a lot more for it than I probably should have... but oh well.  I'm just happy to have her at this point.  I got her as a project that I can hopefully one day share with my son (now 2).  And if the planets line up properly, he'll end up with it when I'm gone.

So, I've got a long road ahead of me before she sees the asphalt.  She runs and I'm sure I could get by with slapping a few new parts on her, but I want to do this right.  I'm going to take her down to the frame and start from there.  And I don't expect this to all come together over night.

Right now, I'm waiting on a NC DMV inspector to come out to give the bike a good once over so I can get an "Inoperable Title" for her.  Once that's out of the way, I'll be on my way to what I'm sure will be many headaches, busted knuckles and a perpetually empty wallet.  ;D

Hey man, welcome aboard!  A word of caution - the inspectors want to see a "complete" bike so resist the urge to take anything apart until after they swing by.   Been there, what a drag  >:(

Spring is right around the corner, and so are those oh so curvy roads in the Blue Ridge!  Hope to see you out there!
It is a proven fact that modifying a SOHC Honda in any way will bring on the apocalypse.

Thanks for the heads up.  Yeah, she's all there in one piece.  I've been itching to get to it, but have fought the temptation.  At this point though, I've taken was has to be 200 to 300 detailed pictures of every nook and cranny on the bike (as she sits fully assembled).  I'm sure there'll be another 200 to 300 pictures taken as the parts come off for reference.

I won't and I won't... promise.  And I may just do that when I get down that way... but it's going to be some time off.

Welcome!  How 'bout posting some of those pics?

Here she is in all of her cruddy/ neglected glory.  How do you like those mirrors and the custom seat?  My personal favorite touch are the chunks of dirt that are embedded in the rattle can paint job. :o  Come to think of it, the weld job on the pipes is pretty awesome too!  ;D

Don't like the mirrors, seat is not the worse that I've seen, but the exhaust is Funky! [sorry, you asked!]

Overall, looks like a great project bike.

PS. Great story about your parents' bikes.

I was just kidding.  Once all of that stuff comes off the bike, it'll never go back on.  It'll probably see the local trash/ recycling center.  I'm thinking who ever welded the pipes was drunk (I'm dead serious).  It has to be the nastiest looking welds I've ever seen.  I have no idea what the mirrors are off of, but yes, they're hideous.  And there may be worse seats out there, but my rear end won't be sitting on this one... that's for sure.  I've got a long road ahead of me.

Check this out...  :o

Drunk welding, I've done that! [and better than him!!]

You can sell nearly everything you take off on eBay [or this website] to help with costs on your build.

Welcome , don't throw anything away.  It is amazing what people will buy on Ebay, and the money will help fund as stated earlier.   I've only welded once and think I could have done a better job than that! That seat isn't all that bad, if it is in one piece I'm sure you'll be able to sell,  good luck with the project, Larry

welcome to the forum nomad. The bike doesn't look bad really, I've seen a lot worse. Like you said it just needs some TLC. I've had my 750 K6 a little over a year. Didn't ride much the summer because of a pinched nerve in my neck witch made it very uncomfortable to do much riding. This coming spring and summer I want to try to get together with all you NC sohc fellows and do a little riding. Looking forward to it. Oh yeah nomad, this forum is great and it will help you alot with your project. good luck ;D

Thanks.  This coming spring or summer may be a little too optimistic for the completion of this project.  BUT, when it's done, I'll definitely enjoy finding some locals to ride with!

Thanks!  With this being my first bike/ restoration, I'm going to need all the luck and help I can get.

Underneath all the cosmetic nastiness inflicted by the PO lies the soul of one of the original superbikes. Instead of "good luck" I'll say have fun  ;D
