Growing up as far from the So Cal scene as is geographically possible in North America in the 60s all we had were magazines. Tom McMullen had started a catalog called Chopper Guide to showcase his products from AEE. There would always be several articles on featured bikes and a few build ups (using AEE products of course). The rest was the products. Tom had bought a knucklehead off of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth and smashed it up. After he got out of hospital he rebuilt it and called it Mindbender. It was the first feature buildup in the magazine. I was blown away by the bike. He later built the Corvair trike and finally drew up the plans for Big Twin, but by that time most of Tom's time was running AEE and an employee Dave Brackett built the Big Twin. These bikes really hit me hard. It was the times, age - everything all rolled up at once. The new stuff from OCC, Jessie James, Billy Lane doesn't do much for me at all.

Big Twin at Oakland in 1970 - it won best bike. Two Sportster engines, the left hand one has the barrels and heads reversed so the carb sticks out the left hand side. The engineering here alone made me drool. A Ford C4 transmission and a Harley 45 Servicar rearend with torsion bar suspension.  All of Tom's/AEE's bikes were painted by Molly (RIP) and were stunning and flawless to me.

These are definitely dated to today's trends, but when these were new they made one heck of an impression on me. Much like seeing my first CB750 in early summer of 1969. Same impact.

My father.  He built some killer KZ900 and 1000 chops in the late 70's, early 80's.

I've always thought those vintage choppers were pretty cool. Especially the ones powered by an inline four, parallel twin, or the occasional boxer. When recent chopper fad hit and was followed by all the TV shows and such, it sort of tarnished the credibility of the vintage choppers. I have never seen a current chopper that appealed to me whatsoever. I think a lot of it is just a sign of the times. I was in a Honda shop recently and to be honest, they don't really have anything in their current US offering that appeals to me. In the past they've always had at least a dirt bike or something that I would like to own but now that the XR line has vanished and the trail bike offerings are just their track bikes with lights and a heavy flywheel, I have even lost interest in those. Probably the last year they had a street offering that really got my attention was 1990 with the VFR750 and the CBR1000. Two great bikes that are still relevant today. It might be an interesting post on here to see if any of the new Hondas appeal to the members.
Anyhow, now that the chopper fad has come and gone I might be more inclined to build one one of these days. If I do I'll have to have the seat with the built-in upholstered sissy bar and the super small front tire. Of course a front brake would not be an option!

to be perfectly honest, Orange County Choppers. more specifically mikey from occ.  I figured "if the retard mikey can build a chopper, then so can I."  but i don't build the Le Ghey stuff they do. only old school stuff.

My brother gave me a couple 750 part bikes, one with extended forks and one with a hacked frame. It got sidetracked by a 750 K0, then a 76 ss.

I was "influenced" by the pile of parts I had to start with; 6 over slugs welded to the fork tubes, gel-coat fiberglass gas tank, butt-ugly seat with an uglier sissy bar! :D

My bike was purchased sight-unseen (a gamble but a cheap one) and was chopperized when it came to me.
