I really enjoyed the brake upgrade using the GL1000 front.  The stock GL rotors are noticeably thinner than those on the CBs.  With the Jeffrey Stephens Goddfrey rotor upgrade, you'll shed some more weight.

yep, I hear ya...I generally feel like sticking my toe in the spokes would be an upgrade over the sohc4 pivoting caliper

thanks for reminding me of one more part I need to source...actually have several stock GL mc's, and a couple F3 mc's.  My shop mate used to be into cart racing and has several delicious looking Hurst Airheart beauties, but nobody can get him up off his junk.  Probably get something simple, effective, and more modern.  I really hate bleeding brakes.  I am generally happiest when covered head to toe in motor oil, grease, transmission fluid, WD40, polishing compound...but the tiniest drop of brake fluid gives me the creeps.

Just keep it off your painted parts!  The GL mc's are not bad and designed to move the increased volume of brake fluid.  Since I am a certified brake junky, I upgraded by CB750 with the GL brakes to a Brembo unit.  Overkill, I know, but it really helps clamp those calipers with less effort.

you ever separate the carbs from the rack/airbox and manage to get them to operate properly again?...Don't get me wrong I love that little bike and it will seriously beat up on some much bigger more modern bully's...but it just has kind of this plasticy weed wacker on steroids feel about it, where an sohc4 feels like some real machinery...my best buddy is a long time Harley Dealer mechanic, rides a Buell XB9R which is wayy faster, the only way I can get him is 'cuz its real hard to keep the front wheel on the ground.  Most of our rides together degrade into quasi-legal street drag road races of epic #$%* talking proportion...so after I got the VF running good he asks to take it for a ride.  I let him.  He goes out for 5 or 10 minutes and comes back with a huge frown on his face.  I ask whats wrong, something wrong with the bike?  "NO, its faster than I thought."

Did a lot of work back in the 80s on the V4s but the two I had never required any work once the valves were adjusted and the clutch slave cylinder and clutch push rod seal were repaired on the 700.  Better all around bikes  than the sohc but as you said it lacks the classic style

I've only ridden a 2000 era VFR.  Lots of torque but smoother like a in-line 4 than a twin.

been having clutch slave cylinder woes myself lately...give me somepointers on adjusting valve clearances, I know you gotta use two feeler gauges at once, but I am foggy on understanding the pull up on the camshaft to get rid of the bearing slop/ special Honda tool situation...also have not managed to get anything that could remotely be called a useful tool near the carb sync adjusters without standing on my head, even then it seems impossible...

yep, sounds similar.  My old 5 hundo actually vibes quite a bit at low to mid rpms and gets smoother all the way to redline at 11 grand...sound goes from the Jetson's car to an angry howl roar that is mostly from the intake as the stock mufflers are very quiet...would love to have a little more exhaust note but no one makes any pipes for these any more, rare and expensive stuff is available on ebay such as Supertrapp, and I dread the nightmare of trying to re-jet this thing...we are talking about 2 downdraft and 2 sidedraft carbs alternating on the rack that doubles as the airbox, with each carb sporting unique, staggered jetting for each cylinder

My friend with the 2000 VFR has the same engine whine (gear driven cams) as my RC51.  That's about all you can year until its rev'd, and then PACHOW GROWWWLL.  Stock exhaust.

two feeler gauges is all I ever used, for the sync I bought a special tool from Snap On.  If you like I can send you a photo of it....Larry

Ok back to bikes...

Carbs...The set of Keihin 7a's I have had since I got this bike have rather high miles on them and I am guessing the needles and needle jets are pretty worn out.  So I rebuilt a set that were off a bike that sat in a shed and rotted away with 3000 miles on it.  They cleaned up well.
