'76 Cb 550k aftermarket foot pegs?
« on: December 04, 2010, 07:40:43 PM »
I am looking to replace my ratty OEM foot pegs, so I started looking for alternatives.  I am having a hard time finding anything on this forum.  I only found this one thread in all my searches: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=40112.0

Can anyone tell me if I will have trouble using aftermarket pieces.  I realize that the ones I see are made generic for many bikes, but can anyone tell me details I should be looking for?  I also see the angle to stock bracket uses.

Most aftermarket pegs come with a standard male post that "seems" like they would possibly work, but I don't want to go through the shipping/return dance if someone here tells me it just cant work.

Primarily I am looking driver pegs, but info on both sets much appreciated.

These are an example of Pegs I've seen: http://www.catalystcycles.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=61_212&products_id=972&osCsid=ukpgemdacrs0ajg9q80e0j9s91

Thanks so much.

ON EDIT:  Please read response #3, some information in this posting is incorrect.  To use aftermarket pegs a modification must be made to the foot-peg mount to retain correct foot/peg orientation.

Great question, and although the time was coming I had never given it a moment's thought.  To answer your question first - yes, you can use the standard aftermarket pegs.  I just went out and grabbed a stock foot peg and mount off my 550 and trod through the snow to my Harley that has after-market pegs on it (Kuryikan (sp?)).  They will work, but not like on the Harley.

The width of the Honda foot peg itself is similar to the aftermarket pegs, however the Honda mount is different.  Not to worry though, the difference it to our benefit and will make the aftermarket pegs have greater utility.  The difference between the Honda mount (saddle) and the standard mount is its width.  The Honda saddle is nearly twice the standard size and the extra width is taken up by a return spring that brings the peg back to level after pressure is relieved, if it is lifted by contact.  Standard mounts don't have that but it sure will be a nice addition to the aftermarket pegs you chose.  The only other thing I can see is that the pin that is used on the Honda mount may be a different size than standard for the aftermarkets (5/16" I believe) but a drill bit applied to either the mount or the new peg (one or the other) should take care of that.

So as I see it you should be able to use an aftermarket set of footpegs with either no or little modification and as a side benefit you should be able to keep the return spring feature too because there appears to be enough sloop in the fit to make up for any slight difference in foot peg mount male member width.

For whatever its worth the reason this post interested me so much is that I've learned that finding the right pegs can really make a big difference in rider comfort and I planned to take a good bit of time in their selection.  However I plan to use a modified stock peg mount on my cafe build, essentially reversing their position so as to move the peg back and up a few inches.  I plan to do this by removing and replacing the mounting stop on the frame, then cutting, repositioning, and welding the stock mount to set (rotate) the pegs themselves to the position I want.  I will then modify the stock brake pedal and shifter by shortening or elongating them (cut and weld) as necessary to maintain a comfortable and safe juxtaposition to the rider's foot.  I'll take pictures of each step of the process and post them on this Forum after I do it for anyone who's interested.

Added on Edit:  Actually on closer inspection it seems that the way the Honda peg is suspended is quite different than on the after market pegs.  Honda's pegs rest on the bottom of the male member whereas aftermarket pegs are stopped by contact on the front face.  I just wanted to point this out to avoid the Howlers, it makes no difference at all in if you can or can not use the aftermarket pegs.

Thanks so much for the response Kong.  I figured there must be a ton (pun intended!) of people who have used aftermarket pegs on their Cafe projects, and I finally did find one post through a convoluted search, which mentioned a set by name.  It seems that this set that was mentioned (Sundance i think) should be possible to slip right in, without modification.  But while looking at the photo of them - they appeared so similar to all the others i have looked at.

So your post is welcome news, and I will now be a little more confident to grab a set that looks right to me, and visually appealing hopefully, and go from there.  Also, it seems that the problems that existed for some replacement pegs stemmed from the fact that they had a particular "top side," so that the angle of the stock peg bracket would make them sit strange/wrong.  Many of the newer ones that I have found are completely round, which should eliminate some (if not all) of that issue.

I am not doing a Cafe build, but rather a personalized version - I guess somewhere between stock (seat, tank, etc) and cafe (possibly turn signals, pegs etc).  Really, just seeing what appeals to me as I go - all with a very LOW budget.  My main reason for wanting new pegs is because a new pair of boots I have (steel toe) seem to get caught up a bit while shifting, so I am looking at slimmer pegs that should give me a little more room, possibly coupled with a slight adjustment of the shifter (thanks Gaither).  Esthetically, I will find it more pleasing, and functionally it will provide a more comfortable ride for me.  Hopefully....

Whoa!  That was one angle of the stock peg I had not looked at.  Fortunately I brought it back in the house and have it in hand right now.  It turns out the flat of the foot position is at an angle to the mounting bolt (pin) for the footpeg.  So indeed you are correct, aftermarket pegs will not work without modification to the mount.  Now from my point of view this isn't a problem because I am going to cut and reweld the mount anyway, so I can point them anyway I want.  But as a stock straight up replacement it doesn't look like it will work.

So please disregard what I said above, in fact the only reason I'm not going to remove it is because its fixable.  Sorry for the false hope - unless you have a welder.  If you've got one this will be no problem.  Of course there is another solution too, just use round pegs.

I'm definitely round peg bound.  Hopefully that should work for me...

Those Iso footpegs are the ones I have on my Harley, but the ones I have also have the stirrups, which are very comfortable.  I also have the matching Iso hand grips, shift peg, and brake pedal.  On the brake pedal I lose a rubber insert now and then, a ring off the shift peg too now and then.  I bought a set of replacements and now and then have to dig in for one.  They are nice items, particularly the grips which are exceptionally comfortable for those 300+ mile days.
