budget build
« on: December 04, 2010, 09:13:32 pm »
Ok crazy question here is there stock honda parts that can be used to make a fun little motor. I remember seeing something about cb750a crank, cb1100 rods and i think rc45  piston. Even if 65m pistons were used what rods would work to combine 65mm pistons with a auto crank. Any stock part not custom ones. I know auto crank use diff chain and a gl1000 clutch gear is needed. How hard would this type build be? I know custom parts are out there but im looking at cheap fun power. Any ideas, thought comments from our experts here would be awesome.

Cheap?
Not shore about that.
I use RC45 pistons and 11000 rods in one of our motors (they run 17mm gudgons).
Don't know to much about the 750A motors, never seen one in the flesh.
I run a DOHC900 crank. (HY-VO primary & cam chains)
The pistons are 71mm
You need to weld up the air gap between 1-2 & 3-4 in the barrel's and add a spacer
We where lucky enough to get a couple of barells sand cast for us.
MRicks CNC units would be the go these days.
The list is a mile long.
Happy to share the info.
But these motors where built from necessity many years ago & are still running, but they demand a lot of TLC.
They where built because at the time it was next to impossible to get good after market comp. gear for SOHC Honda's down here in the colonies.
Cheap if you are able to scrounge the components
But you need to commite a lot of time & energy.
And you need to have access to the resources required to put these things together.

Cheers,
Brian

CHeap fun power would be any early to mid 90s or even later sportbike. 1000 to 1300 for 600-1000cc 4 valve per cylider bikes.
Add all the money together that you woud have to spend to get this together and see if it balances out. If this is a labor of love type thing, then forget what I just said and good luck to you.

I think there was a thread a while back that used a none SOHC crank.

Anyone have a good write up or parts list for one of these OEM+ motor build ups?
Is it worth the effort of making the parts fit?  What have the outcomes been?
I'm kind of interested my self.  I love the hunt of parts on eBay.....

Yep you can use a Honda DOHC900 crank.

We all do it a little differently. But Mr Moonpie has a very good thread on this subject.

Probably not, unless you have a specific competition use for them.
My little motor comes in at 1140cc & 124HP@RW. The big one is 1300cc & 135HP@RW.
The little one is good for around 200 to 250 hours, the big one is good for about 5 minutes.

I'm kind of interested my self.  I love the hunt of parts on eBay.....

are the DOHC rods stronger then the the SOHC?  are they up to the job at those HPs or are people using aftermarket rids?

Ok so what info ive got is the auto crank and dohc are the same stroke. auto has hy-vo primary and sprocket cam chain. clutch gear would need the gl1000 unit and idk what tentioner. 900 rods are 1.5 mm longer and have 15mm wrist pin. Could run aftermarket pistons or the dohc pistons are 64.5mm. but would need valve re leaves cute and need a spacer for the longer stroke. Idk on rod angles and all that im by no means a mechanic i know enough to get myself in trouble ;D. At this point thats all i really know, any ideas? I like the idea of scoring cheap used parts. Idk the exact size but the crank and pistons is a 888 idk what the pistons would add. I not thinking of super high numbers, this would be cheap street motor.

Ken at Cyclex has motors ready to go for just under 2K and have been built by people in the know.
