Chain clearance?
« on: December 19, 2010, 11:00:22 PM »
1976 kawisaki kz400d3.. got some rear sportster shocks (aftermarket?) and they weren't a direct fit. Top was fine, bottom was too wide. I swapped out the bushings with stock as recommended on the KZ forum, but still had to grind down the rim of the bottom eyes, and slightly bend the outer part of the mounting bracket to fit 'em on.. more on that later.

My question is: how does this chain clearance look? The shocks that were on my bike weren't stock - they were off a honda, unsure of model, had a clevis instead of an eye and therefore used the stock metal spacers from the stock shocks to make 'em fit. Anyways, the springs on the replacement shocks aren't any wider than the ones I was replacing, but the bottom part (that connects to the eye, between the eye and the bottom of the spring) was longer than these new ones. As in, the spring on the old (honda) shocks did not extend down as far as these do. Therefore chain clearance wasn't an issue. These new shocks - the spring probably extends down an extra inch further than those I am replacing. The chain next to it is on the sprocket, and therefore unlikely to move latteraly. But when these compress (as I hit bumps) will the spring expand enough to rub into the chain, or am I OK, even though it's close?

The reason I ask is that I broke my ankle recently and can't just hop on the thing and cruise (slowly) down the street and see what happens. So whatcha think?

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

The spring diameter doesn't change with compression. Clearance looks OK to me. Check the coil where it's closest to the chain after a few hundred miles and see if there's any wear marks. I don't think the chain will whip around enough to hit the shock but it is worth a look. If the spring wire is damaged much it will be weak at the damage point and may break.
