Shhhh, I didn't post this.....

The political class inevitably invokes the moon shot or Manhattan Project as a model for every unrealistic energy goal, but for once maybe that hyperbole is apt: A left-right coalition is emerging to end ethanol subsidies.

Last week, no fewer than 17 Senators signed a letter calling ethanol "fiscally indefensible" and "environmentally unwise." Led by Democrat Dianne Feinstein and Republican Jon Kyl, the group said Congress shouldn't extend certain subsidies that expire at the end of the year, including the 45-cent-per-gallon tax credit for blending ethanol into gasoline and tariffs on cheaper imports. Conservatives like Tom Coburn dislike this costly industrial policy, while liberals like Barbara Boxer and Sheldon Whitehouse are turning against the hefty carbon emissions that come with corn fuels.

Even Energy Secretary Steven Chu seems to have found the anti-ethanol religion. Speaking at the National Press Club last Monday, Mr. Chu said that "ethanol is not an ideal transportation fuel" and that the government's focus should be "on ways that we can actually go beyond ethanol." Like most greens, he still supports so-called advanced fuels that aren't made from corn and also aren't commercially viable, but we'll take his partial conversion.

The ethanol industry is responding by predicting disaster if it loses its taxpayer feeding tubes, with the Renewable Fuels Association evoking massive job losses and another Dust Bowl. But what kind of business can't survive without subsidies when government also mandates that consumers buy its products? As the Senators dryly noted, "Historically our government has helped a product compete in one of three ways: subsidize it, protect it from competition, or require its use. We understand that ethanol may be the only product receiving all three forms of support from the U.S. government at this time."

Sure enough, also last week, the Environmental Protection Agency ruled that under the 2007 energy bill Americans must use at least 13.95 billion gallons of ethanol next year, or about 8% of total U.S. fuel consumption. In protecting its free ride, the ethanol lobby is like Fannie Mae before the crash. But at least now there's a glimmer of political hope for taxpayers.

Ethanol was the worst thing to happen to gas, imo. Some may argue lead but I feel any hinderance caused by removing lead has been circumvented.

Its quite funny but if you look into it there are a lot worse things in "new" unleaded fuels than the lead they replaced.....More political bull#$%*....

Yes, and when mayor of San Fran.  She pushed through an (illegal) gun ban ordinance for the city.  All the while she had a carry permit for her own hand guns, as well as police protection at her beck and call.  Getting a carry permit for the average citizen in California is very very difficult anywhere in the state, and impossible in San Fran, unless you are police, a politician, or personally know one of those with enough influence to speak on your behalf.

She IS the personification of an elitist.  And this extends to all of her policies regarding the "elite class" she maintains a position within.  She truly believes people are unfit to govern themselves, and she proves herself right every time she gets re-elected, IMO.

It would be very difficult for me to stand on her side of the room.  My mouth would be dry from all the lost saliva.  :-X

True enough. I moved back to NY a year later. NY is no better than Cali in that regard. The ruling class is getting nervous since the children of the 60's are in their 50s & 60s and remember what we diverted from - oh yeah we vote too.

the problem with ethanol is that most of it comes from a food source like corn
so does the farmer grow corn to feed or corn to drive

Food should never be used for fuel, it will have dire consequences. Our ethanol {aussie} is made from excess sugar cane, biodiesel is good and can be made from multiple different sources, old cooking oil is a good example. I have a friend that runs all his vehicles, excavators, dozers and his Toyota truck on his home made biodiesel....

The corn used for ethanol in the US is grown specifically for that. It is inedible. I have a poli sci professor that goes looney every time we discuss the US ag business.

Its not that simple, good food could also be grown on the same fertile ground now used for fuel production. You make food stuffs {corn is still food either way} and the third world will jump on the opportunity to make some money for themselves at the expense of their own population.   Ethanol is simple to make and there are plenty of other things that could be used rather than food crops. Also the corn you speak of is not inedible and is used for livestock feed...

You might be able to eat it, but it is not sold for human consumption. Its also not fit for export because it is genetically modified, and most countries won't accept it, even "third world" countries. You can probably find King Corn free online. Its kind of boring and dramatic but is informative.

There are also fields of cotton that are inedible.  Crops are grown for profit by agribiz.  The reason they grow "inedible" corn is because of the subsidies.  Take away the subsidies (and the artificially forced market demands) and they will grow food crops, or something else that agribiz can make (slightly less) profit upon.
