cb550 racing cam chain
« on: December 07, 2010, 01:03:00 PM »
Does anybody know of anyone that makes a good racing/heavy duty cam chain for the '78 CB550? Mine's shot and I figured that as long as I'm replacing it, I ought to spend a few extra bucks and get the best one out there.

Thanks

Just shorten an HD Tsubaki for a 750 with a rivet link.

92-95 750  GSXR's cam chain's have flat side links = less wear on tensioner.

I use one, never had to adjust tensioner in four racing seasons

So a stock GSXR (engine size and year?) will fit no problem? Do you have to remove any links?

Yes the 500/550 chain is shorter.

I bought the chain, but its endless. Did you need to get a masterlink? If so, where did you get it? Will the stock masterlink for the CB550 fit?

I carefully splitted the chain with a good quality bicycle tool, dressed a bit a link I took off the chain and reused it as a master link. A bit tricky but doable, rivet the pins a bit after. It was a tip given to me by a shop owner and it seems to work

four racing seasons @ 10,000 RPM and never had the chain split on me.

That said, these master links with flat sideplates do exist, check someone like bikebandit of dennis kirk

I know that a few race guys use those chains FFJ, if they work well in the Gixxer then they'll be fine in a 550.... ;)

The 500/550 doesn't seem to torture its camchain, probably in part because of the slipper tentioner. A new stock chain is more than up to the job for all but maybe full out competition on & off full throttle.

Mick have you seen my bike!!? It needs a heavy duty cam chain its going to be full of torque and horse power. Ok well it was going to be full of torque and horse power but i called honda and they said torque and horse power are no longer available for the 550. WTF so i guess ill either shorten this chain or just buy a new one made for a 550.  ::)

I put a '93 GSXR750 cam chain on my 550 a few months ago with little trouble and have had zero problems. So far, I highly recommend this. Also, the GSXR chain is too long and the leftover links make a pretty sweet bracelet.

Well i have both now. The gsxr chain and 750 chain made by same company. The 750 chain is flat so ill run that one i guess.   Anybody want to buy a gsxr chain?

Did you buy a stock or an aftermarket GSXR chain? Stock works fine. Not sure about AM
