836cc with stock carburetors
« on: November 27, 2010, 03:33:23 PM »
I've always found with automotive engines that for a really streetable engine a standard carburetor and a slightly hotter cam was a good combination with more displacement. I've seen lots of articles on SOHC4 dealing with 29mm and larger smoothbores and high-end cams. Is there any experience with riders who just wanted more torque and real world useable horsepower as opposed to a semi-race engine for the street, like an 836cc kit with an Andrews cam with stock carbs?

As a street rider, all I really want is more torque and midrange.

Just askin'...

I run original carbs with 125 jets on an 836 with a big Isky cam. Had an Andrews "A" grind in it originally but lost oil to the top end and smoked it. The head was ported prior to my ownership as well. I'm a BIG Dude and it keeps me going just fine and it is a daily rider. The headwork and the cam make a big difference in the performance however, with a stock cam in it there is still plenty of go-fastness. A larger carb would certainly give you some gains but they're kinda pricy for riders that just "want more tourque and real world useable power".

The bike in my Avatar was built in 1972. Stock carbs (K1), K0 cam (a little peppier), shimmed up valve springs, ported head, 836 kit and the pipe. Layed down a lot of rubber, got a reputation around town, stolen 6 weeks after completion.   :(
