BRAT styled bikes yay or nay?
« on: December 09, 2010, 04:20:41 PM »
They really have blown up in the last couple years, but the wrench monkee team has build some of the ugliest bikes that seem to be getting the most recognition.

http://www.wrenchmonkees.com/images/bikes/monk15_06.jpg

BIG TIRES, #$%*/stock tank, flat usually ribbed seat, no side panels, no exposed wiring, very flat track'ish. i believe ian barry called them "meth lab meets steroids"
it seems like dudes will throw more money and parts at the bike than actual wrench time.

im just jealous that #$%*ty bikes get more recognition than bikes that look nice/have real workmanship into them.

thoughts?

Wake up, look up, there's a warmth up there
a reminder of peace, a reason to care.

To each his own.

I'm sure that the Billet Barge and Swoopy Ness-Style builders thought the same thing about a lot of the no-frills choppers out there.  My point is, screw what everyone recognizes as cool and build what you love.

I'm in the middle of building a 77 CB550F that's totally different than stock..   Part bobber / part Brat style I guess.   It'll have parts from a Chang Jiang, Yamaha, car style ignition, front fender will become the rear fender and a tractor seat of all things !!!..

You get the picture.  I'm having a blast building my own creation.   Others can think whatever they want about it..... don't care.

Follow your heart, take any and all ideas you like, put'em together and make it your own!!

I say yay, each bike has a place. I could do without the rusty tank on the Kaw linked above.

I prefer the brat style or the Wrenchmonkees (a different style), over most cafe bikes.
I dont think I want to know what the OP thinks is nicer. I think maybe the OP does not realize the amount of work required to get a bike so clean looking..

A bikes major use must be considered.
If you dont commute, or ride around town..but mostly go for a spirited rip around corners.. get a cafe..

If you ride to work, and around town, and use for everyday transportation, a brat style or tracker will do just fine..

Build it for what you use it for THE MOST.. I dont buy the gotta have a tourer for confort to do one long ride a year.. why put up with a landBARGE, for everyday riding, when you only need it for 1 or 2 weeks. Better to suffer a few times on a bike, and enjoy it a lot more the majority of the year....jmo..

whatever you think of "brat style" bikes you have got to give it to the Japanese for coming up with some totally original styles, whether its brat style, bozozoku, fashion, their weird sexual stuff, etc, etc.
personally I'm not into most of it including brat style but i do appreciate the originality

It's called minimalizm. It has it's place. I like them better than choppers anyday. At least brats and bobbers handle and are rideable. Most super raked choppers aren't even that.

BTW my dad used to race flat track about 40+ years ago. I always like that style of bike: big tires, no fenders, minimal seat and trim. Looks cool. Maybe my next bike.

Wow, I had no idea the my extra bikes out back, without all its parts, were actually a "look" that was desirable.

I'll have to tell the neighbors they aren't junkers, they are just the latest and popular brat style, including the rust!   ;D

I'd call it more of a flattracker, but I like it fine.  It looks like the seat is held on with some kind of cloth strap around the frame?

i agree... you see the same style with hot rods also.. i think that people are extreme and therefore when chrome is in style its not too long before the exact opposite will be in style because the anti stylists would dare wanna make something in style then lo and behold it gets popular so... of course they turn to outta style chrome... im for whatever i try to appreiciate everything.... hogs are tough tho
