If you really wanted to do the recall, they may still honor it.

I bought a 93 cherokee last year, 2wd so I was curious if it had posi. since I knew  would be driving it through snow. I contacted jeep with the vin and requested a build sheet. They sent me the sheet, plus told me of an open recall for the brake rotors. They were recalled in the "salt belt" states because they could rust out and disconnect from the hub.

Anyway, 2 months ago I brought the jeep (17 years old, 15 years after the recall was issued, and 229k miles later) they gave me a free brake job! How sweet is that?

BTW, I see these thumb latches all the time on old tanks on ebay and elsewhere and the tanks with petcock and cap and latch only bring around 50 - 75 dollars. Ha anyone actually seen one sell on ebay for 125 or 150?

Broke mine 3 years ago, just remember an ebay seller listing one (the latch, that is) for around $125.  No idea if it ever sold for that much.

Wait, the latch was sandcast!  That's it!

re: the $125 price. That's what Yamiya sells their repros for. They occasionally sell on eBay so it might have been theirs.

There is likely no official NOS unless its buried in a barn somewhere.

The OEM parts were a very poor casting, I've seen broken ones and they have big air holes in them. I'd hope the Yamiya ones are better quality as there stuff usually is.

Unbroken used ones are usually pitted. I know someone who had Brown's re chrome one. the first one they tried broke. The second one held together but Brown's was not able to polish all of one pit out. Looked pretty good at the end.

I just called Honda America about the recalls on my cb400 and cb350.  They are still eligible for the gas cap recall.  They said that any Honda shop should be able to do it.  I'm fine with the cap as it is.  They didn't mention this bulletin which I think my cb400 should be eligible for http://data.sohc4.net/350-400_1.pdf

I also have two k1's that I inquired about. Honda America said that there are no recalls on the k1's. Honda America was incredibly polite and helpful.  They have to manually search for things of this era.  Honda Canada on the other hand was a bit rude and insisted that my vin should have 17 digits and that I'm missing numbers!  I couldn't believe it!

Honda Canada said that because the bikes were never sold in Canada I have to call Honda America. Can anyone confirm when Canada started selling cb750 through dealers?

I looked at a 750 for sale, the dumbazz had pounded the cap into the tank, Bent it all up. I passed when he couldn't produce the promised clear title.

Also met a kid last fall that had just done the re-call.

+1 on the tip of pushing down on the cap BEFORE you depress the latch. I have been riding these things for only ten years but I have never broken a latch but I have always opened them as described. I like the latch its race car cool! The lock is Big Brother trying to mess up another freedom. And it is ugly.

Prospect,

They have been selling CB750's through Honda dealers here in New Brunswick, CA since at least 1970.  The K1 I bought from my local dealer in 1971 is still my garage.

The push button latch on my gas tank still works .. as posted earlier ... press down on the cap before pressing the push button ... never had a problem.

Hmmm ... I never received a recall notice for the push button latch ... but then again if Honda Canada figures they did not sell any in Canada I guess I would not receive one   ::)

Well, well.  I guess I have more phone calls to make.  Interesting why Honda Canada said they never sold the K1 in Canada.  The guy didn't seem to know what he was talking about though.

I don't think it was a world wide recall . It was the U.S. Naderites, it is no more dangerous than any other gas cap from that era. Honda is famous for bending over backwards to any government issues. For instance the reserve lighting unit on the GL 1000 was something the government was thinking about making manditory so Honda implemented it to look good. I have seen lots of crashed Honda CBs of all types and not one of them was burned or had a broken latch. One of the rumors was it was actually implemented to keep owners from opening the tank while riding and checking the gas level while in motion. Now that could cause a flaming crash. ::)

I forgot to mention that I had two opportunities to exit my K1 over the gas tank. :o  Never had a problem with the push button latch ... just left a couple of knee dents in the tank.
