feedback on E-bay
« on: April 24, 2006, 06:09:05 PM »
Well, I have a dilemma and I hope the people here can help being I've had great advice before from here.

I won an item from E-bay and the seller won't let me pick up even though they are only like 20 minutes away. I thought about neutral feedback, and stating why but it was a really good deal and a great part. I though I could save the 14 bucks by doing a pick up, but they said no, UPS only. Am I being a total Jacka$$ or is my request reasonable? I consider that it'll take UPS two to three days to figure out I'm this close where I could have it in a half hour if I could pick it up.

Feel free to put me in my little place if this isn't cool. ;D

Thanks a million,

Peace and Long Rides,

Jeff

The time to ask the seller to make special arrangements for you is before you bid.  That way if you don't like their answer, you can move on and buy it from someone else.  The seller is perfectly within his right to stick to the terms of sale listed in the auction, including shipping the item rather than arranging for pick-up.  It may be much more convenient for him to go drop off the package with UPS at whatever time best suits him rather than trying to set up a time for you to pick it up.  Also, if he doesn't ship it, he has no proof of delivery.  He would have no protection if you decided to say you never got the item and filed for a chargeback.  Don't give someone less than positive feedback for following the terms of sale you agreed to by bidding on the auction.

i agree with the post above, time to work it out is before, not after. the seller may have some profit ont he shipping which he has factored in.

Sometimes ya got to respect the sellar on e-bay. They like the sell and ship, even if it is close. When it goes out it will be a day, well unless it has to go a day here after pickup an be sorted and travel a day back to dist for delivery. What is th e UPS fee?

Did they specify local pickup avail?? If not and they treated fairly and followed through on wat they stated/told you??. Well it does not mean for neutrol ar negative feedback.

Some people do not like comapny of others, I can respect that.

Just my $.02 worth.

Yeah, I've notice that on some listings. It really is something to approach before bidding.
I always ask about shipping charges (if not posted or a calculator isn't available) and/or anything
That I need to know before posting. You need to let it go this time and be totally clear next time
on the details. After all, there could be any number of reasons (some of which were posted here)
for this requirement.  Later on, Bill

Depends on what the listing said.

if the listing said local pickup is OK, then you should be able to do it.

if the listing said shipping only, then your resquest, while logical, isn't reasonable.

if the listing said nothing about local pickup, then the time to ask was before the end of the auction.  You could offer to split the cost of shipping, ie give the seller the extra profit they factored in, but save the rest of the shipping charges.  If they are not set up for local pickup, it will take much more of their time to meet with you, find your box, have you open the box and examine the item, than the time it will take to simply print an label, slap it on a box and add the box to the pile of other boxes.

I am sure the guy is sticking it to ya on shipping , as 95% of Ebay'ers do.
They figure they can add some cash onto their final selling price by shooting "high" with the s&h.
But I agree with the masses, as you should of emailed the seller to see if he would be willing to
cut out the S&H if you came and picked it up before the auction was over....

If anything , dont leave him any feedback, and call it a day.
Depends on what you wanna do..

One thing with shipping is that the seller usually factors in his ebay and or paypal fees into the price.  It sounds shady but I've done it too.  But you need to work all details out before the auction ends.  I recently won an auction and the seller was only 30 minutes away and he wouldn't budge on the local pickup.  I had to pay the crazy shipping price, but it was my fault.  I didn't ask ahead of time.  But I wouldn't leave neg or neutral feedback on the item.  Either Positive or like Pro said none at all.

Genuine reasons for sellers not accepting pick-up:

a) They are making some profit on the shipping.
b) They don't want to disclose their address.
c) They prefer to spend five minutes in the PO than waiting half an hour for a buyer.

I used to sell my used CD's at 2 euros starting price each, making one additional euro with the shipping. That way I was selling each at three euro, even with the starting price. It happened that a guy living in my same small city won three or four CD's at the starting price, and he wanted to pick them up. I explained him the situation, and agreed that I had no problem with pick-up as long as he paid that additional euro per CD, because even then he will be saving the post. Finally he decided to have them delivered. The PO is farther from my house than his house; I could have just stepped in front of his house and slide the CD's in the PObox, but a deal is a deal... I felt very strange that day.

Thank you very much for your wisdom.
Just to clarify, it said nothing about shipping or pick up one way or another.
I actually bought one set of shocks and to my dismay saw these later. these are the type I had actually been looking for and settled on buying the ones I had already won. Before I bid, I did send an e-mail requesting a pick up but it took so long to reply I was afraid I was going to lose the chance to get them and put in my bid. I then got the reply of no to the pick up so I was stuck. I now have two sets of shocks, well, they are on the way at least.

I actually decided on a combination on the feedback, I'll leave a positive feedback but leave it blank and let other buyers make the inference. I wasn't all that happy with the long wait for the reply but I did so want those shocks.

I am becoming something of a regular seller now, and while most of my oil cooler kits go to the USA, Canada or Europe, there are a few sold here in Oz, and to be honest, unless I know who's coming to visit, (and of course, I don't) I'd prefer to send the item out.

I don't "rip' anyone on the shipping, in fact I eat a couple of bucks to keep the price down to a reasonable level, to continue selling them as regularly as I do, as volume sales beat profit margins hands down.

The seller doesn't know you, and is probably just being cautious about who he invites to his front door. Respect his privacy, and leave him fair feedback. "Do unto others". Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Do watch out for shipping prices, as most sellers,
have it figured to cover costs, and guarranty them
    a profit. {some a lot more than others...}
remember if you dissagree with a seller, it is
almost impossible to "fix" the feedback later on.
E bay is set up for sellers, and  the fees first.
not buyers.....found that out trying to buy a bike.
After I bought it , the seller partially stripped it.
the only proof turned out to be the listing pic.
                  showing it complete....
Took 3 months to get it resolved.........
            A lesson learned.
