PROJECT FINISHED!  SCROLL DOWN FOR FINAL PHOTOS!!!

CB650Z 1979
Hi, it all started when everyone was watching the football on TV. I had put a bid in on a 1979 CB650Z on eBay. As the auction was closing I could see that I probably put a too high max bid this old CB, and with the footie on TV it soon became mine, at £265. I reckon it was actually not worth more than a £100 for spares but that's life. It cost another £80 to get it home with the fuel and the help of my mate and his Sportage and BMW trailer.
Got it home took some photos and set about stripping it down to the bones, that took a day and a half.
The frame went to Caerphilly Powder Coatings and I set about sorting all the other parts. I started to dismantle the engine and found it full of a grey metallic sludge. So at some stage the engine had let go!
In the process of looking for spares I came across a chap with two CB650Z's and a box of parts including a spare engine, stripped down in bits. So I bought the lot. So I now have three CB's. One running, one early one with an unmolested engine that I intend to rebuild and one on the bench being refitted.
At the moment I could do with a good quality handlebar and rear hand rail. Anyone got spares?

Hi, two were first registered in June 1980, one has a low frame no. mid 250's but has an engine with early 3000's and the other has mid 3000's with both frame and engine. The other is registered in March 1981 and has low frame no. late 200's with a very close match on the engine. So I guess none of them are 1979!! I must pay more attention in class - I must pay more attention in class ...................
I am informed that the early engine numbers had a higher lift cam and thus more horse power than later models?
Yes please include me into the owners list.

   All the cams are the same except of a lopo pos from germany of all places.   Welcome.

The rocker covers and carb types give clues to the year of the engine.

I have been considering using a 650 for my next Cafe build, so I'll be looking forward to fallowing your progress.

I'd say your off to a hell of a good start now that you have THREE of them...!      ; ]

Hi Chaps,
The snow has put a stop on delivery of those elusive bits and bobs so I have been Zinc plating some of the nuts and bolts and fittings to speed up the assembly for when the handlebars arrive. Can't put the forks together as waiting for two piston rings stuck in a snowdrift somewhere between here and David Silvers. I Don't think there will be any rideouts for a couple of weeks.
Even though I have three bikes and a box of spares there is always something that just isn't good enough to put on the rebuild like the rear grab rail (bumper) and the cost of rechoming is crazy. Slow but sure!

HI,
Finally got the parts for the front forks, put the sliders into the grit blaster and gave them a once over with glass beads and then sprayed them with Halfords petrol resistant laquer. They look great. I will post a phot of the assembled unit tomorrow. Bagged a new Motad 4/1 on eBay for £175. Was considering the Mac 4/2 system but at £175 I could not turn that down. Might even start working on the engine soon. Would love to uprate the cc.

Ok, got the forks assembled and fitted.
I have got a problem! I have two blue side panels that have been hand painted to a top quality finish, but the tank has a dent in it. I also have a red NOS tank but don't have matching panels, so here is a longshot, anyone got two NOS side panes to match the red tank?
Polishing the wheels at the moment while waiting for chrome parts to return.

I finally got the bike finished today and will be zipping off tomorrow for an MOT!

Very nice restoration! Not many 650s get that type of treatment.  :)

You ought to take a look at the HEI conversion linked in my signature... Pretty good upgrade for the '650s.  8)
