Jerry, Do you have, or can you draw up a quick and rough drawing or image of the route you are thinking of?
Maybe google map it or something just so we can see how your are thinking of connecting the states.

I gotta play with that some. That requires computer skills    I have my trusty Rand McNally atlas right here beside me that you guys can't see. Now if I can 1st pull up a US/Canada map and 2nd draw on it then 3rd figure out how to post it then I'm in business. I'll check into Google maps in a little bit.

There is just no way we can cover everything with a basic ride plan.

I guess this needs to turn into an annual event then.  That way, those left out of the route or those whose bikes may not be up and running (cough-cough-me-cough) during this thing can do it next go around.

Yeah, we'll have to do that but let's get more people going on this so "it" can be more representative of the whole. I've started just using "it" for now.

There's a way to download your route to Google Earth from your Garmin GPS or TomTom. so I'm sure you can create the route manually as well. Google earth will give the topo and 3D but Google maps has the neat street view for landmarks and such. I forget what the language is that you use to plot routes in Earth but I'll see if I can figure it out.

Jerry,  I have a program called Delorme Earthmate which runs on a PC. Very easy to use and I think it can be upload. It allows you to plot a route in the US and I think Canada. You can add stops and vias and it keeps calculating the route and making adjustments. Looks like your Rand Macnally on the screen. If I can find it I can send it to you.

I have a built-in GPS in my Acura but nothing portable. I used Harley Ride Planner for my last trip. Nice but could be a pain. Drag and drop routes. Won't work for what we need, More for private use. Sounds like I just need a map that I can post up and just use a draw tool with a highlighter to initially just draw some lines rather than specific routing?? I probably have such an animal on one of my computers but I was out of school a long time before I got a computer

I'm surprised this worked as well. It almost stumped my 13 y.o. daughter. I thought it might be larger and the yellow is hard to determine. This is my initial thoughts and only a rough basic idea. This is always subject to change. It covers all 48 lowers and all the lower provinces. The final micro-routing should be determined by the riders to fit what is possible for them so long as we cover the 48 + the provinces. Follow the lines beginning in Daytona at the Daytona 200 in March and watch the weather improve as we travel.

Brilliant! I'm sure someones suggested this but I don't feel like re-reading all these pages, organizing local group rides to coincide w/ certain legs would be super-fun. It'd be great to get something going this year even if it's abbreviated.

That's lookin good!!  Might even be able to make a couple sections..any idea how long the time frame would be from when you head east from say Reno, till you get back to  say..Boise?  I'd kinda like to run from SD to SF to Reno (2-3 days?), then Boise to Seattle (another 2-3 days?)..time and money permitting of course...  looks like lots of opportunities to pick dates and times for gatherings so those that can't actually participate in the relay can get together for meet and greets along the way...maybe sign a trip log to be enshrined in the SOHC4 national headquarters? Someone should start a journal at the beginning and keep track of who joins up and drops out along the way, parties, pitfalls, and places of interest encountered, then pass it on to the next record keeper when the first guy drops out..

I love the journal idea. Some sort of gnome should definitely happen but a journal would be awesome! How about a gnome, a diary and a camera that gets passed from rider to rider. I'd be happy to donate a few bucks towards their purchase.

It has been suggested to have a tank bag to pass to the next rider. This was/is an excellent idea. This is something we all could ride with and pass to the next guy. We don't have to worry about bike specific as we all have tanks. I've never ridden with one so I need the experience from this! It should contain in addition to "it", the journal as you guys mention, and the camera idea is a definite plus a tool kit and a first aid kit and whatever else we may decide is good. I envision the journal having each rider with dates and info about their bike, where they are from, the miles they ride, what their itinerary is, etc. We need total rider miles and total miles for the route. A simple to operate "universal Rally camera" is a good idea. Downside is there are SO many cameras on the market and they all operate differently. A Rally camera will come in handy for those that do not have a camera or have dead batteries for instance. We are working on a potential Rally Website in addition and seperate from this to blog, upload pix, keep tabs on riders and where "it" is at all times, tag team locations and anything else intersting or not interesting. Upload at the end of each day.

There are lots of cheap cameras out there..I picked up a couple 3.2mp digitals for like $20 off CL..just make sure it uses SD cards rather then something odd, like the Olympus I got that uses XD cards, hard to find and not as inexpensive as SD..and if you keep it to the lower definition settings, you can get hundreds of pics on a 1gig card, plus easier to upload to the website..

Canons have the same basic functionality from the 1970's through today and operate on AA batteries, they start at about $100 and use standard memory cards. Seems like the best chance of getting these old folks, retirees, fossils who might still be operating these old bikes to figure out how to use one.

Jerry-thanks for posting the map, it gives a better look at the routes.  I would be interested in riding with any midwestern guys who are down for the relay.  I know the route will be fine tuned, but just from looking at the map for the midwestern route, I can say I 70 through Kansas and Missouri is pretty straight and boring.  We midwest folk should come up with a better route.

That's the idea! You guys tailor your routes within the timeline parameters of the guy before you and the guy after you. I really think there should be plenty of time to make your own routes interesting and still be able to catch up to the next rider. I like US40 or US50 through KS, etc as a better alternative at the very least! I only do I-70 in the car when I have to drive 1200 miles in a day. Make it happen. This is up to you guys.
