Leg 5 (August): take the ferry from Seaweb's and Magpie's at Victoria, BC to AK

I'm also in Victoria (most of the time). Just wanted to clarify . . . you're talking about taking the ferry from Victoria back to the mainland (Vancouver) then ride up to Alaska? There's no ferry that goes from Vancouver Island to Alaska, cruise ships maybe.

Perhaps I am thinking of the Alaska Marine Hwy ferry departing Bellingham, WA which is close to both Victoria and Vancouver. I know there is at least 1 that travels to Alaska. Ride your bike on. You can sleep on the deck, in a berth or cabin?

That kinda looks like fun..it's about $430 if you go (one way) Bellingham to Juneau now, it's about $760 if you go in July...a 2.5 day boat ride sleeping on deck...might wanna wear yer woolies if you go now tho..

If you can schedule the SOHC trip for 2012........I may be able to ride the entire route and take a picture from Denali and a few other places.......I don't know about the Haul Road because of weather conditions.

I've been to Alaska and am looking to return for a 3-4 week adventure..........probably have an escort with a camper for sleeping and bad weather travel days. Anybody else?

I've wanted to ride from Portland to Alaska for years... It's one of two states I've never been to. I'm hoping the '96 KLX 650R I just bought might be the bike to do it.

I know we are in the initial planning stage.  Here is what I see for the SC, NC, VA, and TN section so far:

From the initial itinerary and response it looks like end of March I would meet with Bender01 (Bender01 - Savannah, Charleston to Columbia, SC) in Columbia SC.  I know there are some guys in Wilmington that may be interested, so I could head that way.  If they don't want in then I'm inclined to head towards Cherokee and pick up the Blue Ridge Parway and follow that towards VA.

Wardenerd, Asom, Markcb750, Drones 76 should be in on this leg of the trip, we could all coordinate dates and times.  Also, the Parkway goes right through Uncle Ernie's backyard, maybe he would come out and ride some too?

If there are no interested parties in VA, I'd head towards Nashville and meet up with Spanner1 (God help my liver) and Tugboat.  Perhaps find a midpoint to hand off to the Middle TN boys?

I'm salivating as I type and my keys are slippery  Can't convince my riding partner to do this. I HAVEN"T been to Alaska. He did a land/sea tour last year. I even suggested to him to take the ferry from WA one way and ride the other. Not sure what's wrong with him  Haul road?? Not sure what that is.

Hell yes  NOW THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT BOYS!! Having 1 guy ride a leg this long is ideal. You guys meet up along the way and enjoy. Ride with him as long as you'd like then peel off. If we can get more longer range riders like this it just may be easier than we all thought.

Lop off a segment through W VA, ride the Daniel Boone and Cumberland Pkwys in KY then down to Nashville perhaps?? Should be a beautiful ride even if it's 4 lane. We gotta get those 2 states too.

Excellent. Welcome aboard, you're now on the list. Sounds like Dallas to OK is the option (for now) but that can always change. Want to try to keep a basic outline. We do plan on having "it" along to hand off and a journal for each rider to make entries. Probably carry all the stuff in a tank bag to pass along too.

I like it.  What would be the route from Columbia to Cherokee/Blue Ridge Parkway, 26?  When I was looking at the map last night, I see that 321 goes from Columbia to Blowing Rock, NC and you can get on the BRP at that point.  It does cut off the beginning of the parkway, though. Either way is good with me.  I will probably meet up somewhere on the BRP and head north into VA.  My bike likes 45-55 mph so the parkway is good for the majority of my driving.

Because of my location I can take the little guy into Manhattan and shoot him on top of the Empire State Building, Ground Zero and maybe the Brooklyn Bridge.

I can then take him up up to the Delaware River where NY, NJ, and PA come together, so he can be on the rock that puts him in 3 States simultaneously. I can throw in West Point too.

If I can time it right, I can get him to one of the famous Marcus Dairy Sunday meets. From there I could hand him off to someone who will take him on the New England leg.

I will need someone to hand him off to me. We do have members in NYC that could do the NYC pictures, and I will handle the NY, PA and the CT handoff.  So I am very flexible. If I can get a wingman or two that would be terrific, but I can also do the mission solo.

Is there any sense that some of you are going to turn this into an Iron Butt run?

I only ask because I was invited to be part of a ride from Vancouver Island to Baja Mexico last year and spent a great deal of time and money getting things arranged for what I understood to be a friendly two week round trip affair. Turns out everyone else was making it a race, 3 countries in 36 hours. I respect their endurance and dedication, I just don't want to travel so quickly.

We can spread this over 6 months so there is no real hurry. We start off early in Florida and zig to the west coast, zag back to the east and zig once again on the final trek westward. While we are zigging and zagging we should be taking time and enjoying ourselves doing some sight seeing/touring, meeting up with our brothers and maybe some partying I'd hope. You gotta also take time to post/blog on the dedicated website we plan on utilizing. We'll be following the seasonal weather patterns as we increase lattitude. We'll dip north and dip south and try not to go in straight lines (boring). I'd venture to say many of you guys may not have done any touring or very many miles at a time and that's fine. If someone wants to do a bunch of miles while others join in and drop off that's great too. Sometimes inexperience, old bikes and old bodies can't take the punishment, er fun that long days and many miles can create. When 2 or more riders get together you MUST talk over everyone's riding styles and how you're going to ride together. I've done many miles in a day or rode a little then relaxed on the beach for the next 3 days. Main thing is communication and cooperation

BobbyR, you got one wingman - me.  I'm sure there are others.  I posted over on Hondachopper.com and a respected member/mechanic has pm'ed me that he'd like to be involved.  He's down near Philly, I'm over in Bergen County but can do the whole PA, NJ, NY to where ever leg with you.

I have enough spare parts to cover just about any problem if one arises.  I've also got a couple of mechanics/shops around here to help if needed also.

I think it would be cool to have a picture with the NYC manhattan skyline as a backdrop.  I know of a bunch of places where this is easily do-able.  A picture at night would be awesome.  Just a suggestion though.

Matt, we could meet up like Bear Mountain or Sloatsburg, and if you want the ultimate disrespect, we could ride up to OCC and take a Pic of the Gnome and the Hondas in front. 

We could them head up toward Pa from there trying to stay off 87 which is not interesing until you get past Middletown.
We could, cross the Delaware over the Bridge at Port Jervis to Matamoras Pa, grab a bite and and cruise back through the parks. I gotta do some figuring.

We do have a preliminary contact at Honda Canada that is working on another project and will be contacting them about both. We'll see where that goes and if it's only a name of a person to contact then we have made some progress.

I initiated contact with Corbin pertaining to this today also. A small start but nonetheless a start.

Instead of any gnome, geisha girl, or Godzilla doll, that a rider would have to carry.
What about a scroll type document in like a tube canister that you would carry building plans in, that you could through over your shoulder with a strap?

The document could have some title as in SOHC4 1st Annual Relay Across America, or World Wide Relay.
then under all of the detailed information, a bunch of blank fill in spots for every rider to list, Name, City, State, Age, Bike, Miles ridden, Date, and so on.
It would just be passed through state to state and have a designated meeting area for everyone in that state to sign.

Just a thought....
