Happened upon an AGM battery
« on: December 07, 2010, 10:32:21 PM »
Hey guys,

My friend was cleaning out his basement and found a small AGM battery and I was wondering if that would be enough to run my bike on.

You can see it here: http://www.batteriesplus.com/pc-32755-32755-XTAX4L-BS.aspx

Its only 3Ah and 50CCA.  The CCA doesn't bother me because I only use the kick starter and I don't use blinkers.

Do you think I would be good or do you think it would die while waiting to go at a red light?

Which bike? And are you running a stock ignition system? (points and original coils)

Sounds low on the amp/hours, but might be alright generally speaking. Maybe add an on/off switch on your headlight if you don't have one, or run a low wattage headlight.

Many know more than me on this but the battery is rated at 3 amps discharge for an hour.  I know most don't actually deliver their rated capacity, and the numbers are extrapolated from very low discharge rates, but at 1/2 rated capacity, you would still be able to draw over an amp for an hour with the bike not throwing a charge back in at all.  Charge rate might be an issue at that capacity.  I believe it will accomplish what you want out of it. TT?

It is certainly not a problem with a 5.5 amp, so it may work.
Check you local laws though some require, lights on without motor running, that may be an issue. I think you will not want a high draw headlight.
I did mean for a CB750, the 500/550 seems to have charging issues, so not sure on them

Sorry I didn't give the bike details.

My bike is a CB00 and the charging system is stock but I have Dyna ignition and coils.

What kind of headlight would you suggest?

CB00
obviously doen't have much of an engine  ;D  Maybe you can specify how many cc you would like to ignite. Try again, please.

I got to warn you, some electronic ignitions need at least 10V to fire, if your battery is on the small side there is a far greater chance you will run into a low voltage/no start issue..

I would agree on that, I have a 5amp battery used for alarms and I've been having that probably, you just need to kick harder..
