1971 steering lock key
« on: December 11, 2010, 04:20:38 PM »
I am getting my triples ready to go back on the bike and I can't seem to get my key in the steering lock. I can't tell if it is the wrong key or if my lock cylinder needs servicing. Before I take it all apart can someone tell me if the same key that fits my ignition should fit the steering lock?  It appears that I have the original key and ignition switch.

Same key should work both.  Try a bit of lubricant in the stem lock..Larry

Thanks. I kind of figured it would be the same key. I've tried some lube but it's pretty gummed up. I'm going to try to flush it out with contact cleaner then relube and see if that works. It's not like I can't live without it but I figured I'd try to fix it while I had it off the bike. It's the type shown below in the pic that I forgot to attach earlier.

This number is the lock code for the lock. It starts with a "T" in this pic. Your ignition should have the same number, as well as your seat lock (if you have one)

And, if your key number is different from the lock number (which means someone had to replace the keyswitch at some point), you can go to eBay and search for 'Honda key'. You'll find a real nice guy there who will ask you to send your lock number first so he can check his inventory, then he will sell you the right key, first time. I've bought many from him.
