What colour is HRC red
« on: December 13, 2010, 09:11:21 AM »
Despite the simple answer RED!, I want to paint a new fairing and tank for my 750F1 in the original Honda Red that they used on the TT and Race bikes. Is there a colour code for this paint?
I guess this is also the colour of the CR750?
Did several searches for the answer but nothing so far.

Thanks.
Looked that up and it seems it's called Traffic Red.
Or even Signal Red!

Yeah - heard it called signal red before.
Incidentally if you want the correct silver too it's Honda Nobel silver...

Due to personal issues with colour perception it might as well be green ???
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

Ha ha, I have an origional pic of the team from Daytona and the quality of the colour prints from back then makes the CRs look as if they are 60s tank red. :D :D :D

The original HONDA red from '59 - '67 tends to fade orange if the bikes are left in the sun for a few years. I matched the color for both single and double-stage paint (red & silver) and could send you the codes...........or you could go to your local paint store and buy Monza Silver or Furgeson (tractor) Red and be very close for less $$$$. The trick to getting the paint color correct is the undercoat......on base-coat clear-coat red use a dull yellow undercoat..........on silver use standard light-gray or dull white.  If you want the red to be very bright and deep, use a gloss silver or gloss gun-metal gray undercoat.

Mark McGrew should have the color match for the copper-orange used on the CRs at Daytona..........

So, I think you're suggesting that I can use a candy silver base coat for the red, which would give a deep impression.
All good stuff.
I'll show you photo of the finished tank.
Many thanks

You did ask for it Sam and those were nearly kind words too  ;D  ;D  ;D
I painted it blue and green (and black with a little mica) because...I didn't want to paint it in the RC red/silver, as far as I'm aware Honda didn't use those colours on a 750 although many customers do  and i is a very nice colour scheme t use and I didn't want a daytona orange bike because, well, that's what a lot of folks do and I'm never one to follow a trend (just ask my wife about my clothes!!)

So went for the earliest possible Racing 750 colour scheme, very 60's :D
At the end of the day though, each to his own, variety is the spice of life  ;)

Man that screen looks big - glad I cut it down since these first shots but I can't post current pictures as it's in bits for its winter fettling now - ignition upgrade, exhaust changes, new plugs, clipon adjustment, carb sync take off addition, clean....the list goes ever on  ???

Chips1953.............Triumph used silver as an undercoat (primer) to achieve their bright paint finishes in the '50s and '60s. I don't paint but have been learning to get the correct ingrediants for my restorations.  BTW......if you spectograph old paint from the underside of a gas tank, the formula will include the fuel blend!

I thank you for this information. I've been painting for a short time now and want to learn. The tank I'm using is an oversize tank made of alloy which I've modified to suit low bars and a fairing. I wanted it to represent what I remember of Honda when I was no'but a lad.
The history of the tank is unknown to me but as it is so over size he maker must have had long distances in mind.
I will put a photo up as soon as I can.
BTW the machine I have is an F1 according to some of the info from this site, a Japanese import with low mileage. Unfortunately after I'd got it viable someone reversed into it in a hotel car park.
Many thanks so far for the info.

When HONDA painted over alloy, they used a brushed finish to hold more paint.  You may have to 'polish' your primer to get the bright effect.

I propose to use a bar coat, which is yellow, then a light grey undercoat, twice, followed by a 2 pack candy silver base coat, with a 2 pack Monoco Red, finishing off with a clear lacquer. Not sure about decals at the moment.

The wonderful thing about motorcycles is that allow us to create what we want, and that they are magnificent, in the eyes of the beholder.
