Spark Grounding out on cb350
« on: March 18, 2006, 04:54:00 PM »
I have a 1972 honda cb350 twin that for the life of me I can't get to run right.    I'm almost positive to have it narrowed down to the coil. At first only one of the cylinders was cutting out.  I have a clymer manual that has a few steps in it to test the coil which I performed earlier this morning.   It showed 4 ohms on the primary wires on the right side of the coil (Good). On the primary wires on the left side it zeroed out.  I measured the resistance between both Secondary wires (Spark plug wires) and it was 15,000 ohms (Good).  So I went and found an old cycle shop that had a used coil like I needed and I installed it on the left side which had previously had been grounding out.  Suprise suprise it didn't work. I pulled out the ohmmeter and started testing everything and all of the wires seem to have continuity between each other now.  I know I plugged the wires back to where they were. There is continuity between both of the caps, and there is continuity between the caps and the engine block.  What in the world is going on?

help is very much appreciated,
Nathan

you could go back to the begining {original coils,in original position} check for spark,
    switch left and right ,and see if the "no spark" changes sides with the coils,
    if it does, {coil problem} if not, and spark is still good on the same side,
      you have to check all the way bac to the points, and power, to the coils
      from the ignition side. {this is a starting point, process of elimination}{google}
         Oldmanhonda.com  The site has some good working electrical diagrams, that are worth a
         look see.......let us know what you find out.
             Hope it helps

Guys I got it working, Someone told me not to believe so much in what the ohmeter says and take a traditional approach to it. I don't know exactly how to explain it but when I shut the bike off it stopped right in the place where the points would close to ground everything?!? Something like that. The right cylinder cutting out turned out to be a clogged jet underneath a plastic cap in the carb.
thanks,
Nathan
