CJ360T rear shock mount problem- is there a solution?
« on: December 14, 2010, 08:00:52 AM »
I have a CJ360T that my daughter and I are planing on making a CR out of. In her haste she applied too much force on the rusted on rear upper shock mounts and sheared the bolt off. See picture. What is the best way to repair this? Is it to drill and replace with a similar bold size? I cannot imagine cutting and rewelding a new shock mount with out the appropriate jig.Am I missing an obvious fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

MAS

Cut a slot into the exposed portion of bolt, apply heat, then try to turn it out with a flat-head screwdriver.  Alternatively (or if that doesn't work) drill it and use a bolt/screw extractor with judicious application of heat again.

If I understand it correctly, that's not the remains of a bolt, but the remains of the threaded portion of the entire mount that twisted off from the nut.

If it were mine, I'd just cut the stub off flush, then drill and tap a hole and use a bolt.  I believe that all that threaded part does is hold the shock on.  The non-threaded portion carries all the vertical loads and the threaded part just keeps the top half of the shock from walking sideways.  Not much side-load at all.

At least, that's how I'D do it...

Good luck with it, whichever way you go.

Kirk's solution will work, and all the stress is on the mount  as the threaded portion only holds the shock in place.  You could even grind in flush and have a hardened part of a bolt welded to the mount...Larry
