I know it's kind of ridiculous to plow $500 into a $1500 machine but I miss my bike and I'd like the opportunity to stab the thieves in the eyes... repeatedly.

So, looking at what's out there it looks like Lo-Jack and Phantom are it for tracking and recovery.

Anyone used either of these? Opinions? Anything else I should be looking at for the next machine?

Phantom - GPS, motion triggered, crash detection, they call you, monthly fee - basically OnStar

Lo-Jack - FM, have to file a report, possibly your PD doesn't support it, much more expensive

Are you at all interested in theft-prevention or deterrents, or is this thread specifically about bike recovery?

I only ask because I don't want to start offering suggestions that you've either already thought about or don't care to hear.

I think the bike wasn't just taken for a joy-ride. I suspect there was a truck or somesuch involved and that the bike had been scoped out. I'm biased of course.

So I feel an audible alarm, in the city, is pretty much useless although I might be tempted to put a little blinking LED in the triple where it could be seen - but that won't deter anyone who's determined. Seems like nothing will deter someone who's determined other than moving out of the city and getting a place with secured parking. So track and retrieve looks to be the best option.

I am ALL ears though cause I know I don't know it all.

Too bad you couldn't have a cheap GPS trnsmitter on your bike and a receiver/tracker software for your computer. You can do the Garmin wristwatch thingy hidden on your bike but somehow you need to download the info onto your computer or the Mapmyride type of websites. Gotta be a cheaper way to do that with today's technology.

There are cheaper GPS units but they don't transmit - mostly for doing post performance on a fleet of vehicles or seeing where your wife is going.

Once you need the live transmit option it looks like they're all in the same price range with a monthly.

Of those, the Phantom seems to have the best options for my purpose that I can find.

How about a multi-line phone plan that has gps tracking for the kids?  You get one of the free phones to hide somewhere on the bike and whatever other phone you want for yourself.  Not exactly cheap, and there is a monthly charge, but if it replaces your existing phone plan then that would cut the cost.

How far away are you from your bike when it's parked most of the time?  An audible alarm may not help much if you can't hear it, but if you're close to your bike most of the time and you know what the alarm sounds like, it could make all the difference.

I'm all for doing whatever is necessary to recover your stolen property, but the old saying is very true.  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  The vast majority of theft-prevention techniques will be far easier and less expensive than any decent property recovery systems.

What about agreed-value insurance coverage?

I haven't speced them out but if you could track a phone that way it would work. I know that the higher end phones do that for sure but then the price points start to converge. It would still give the thieves some valuable time to get away/disable the phone though.

What about agreed-value insurance coverage?

Insurance was the big lesson here as well as the realization that someone would want my old bike for whatever reason vs a new bike on the same street. Unfortunately, insurance won't get me that year of my life back fiddling with the machine. I'm kind of invested in that facker now.

Usually the bike would be parked within a block and mostly right out front of my apartment building but I ignore people's alarms all day and I expect they would do the same. By 3 or 4 am the alarm would have to be so loud to wake me up I'd end up being the criminal/nuisance in the neighborhood. That's why I'm not sold on an alarm.

The Phantom on the other hand would ring my cell which is usually not too far from my head (I use it as an alarm as well) as soon as it was moved - on board accelerometer - and I would have known the bike was gone within a few minutes as opposed to seeing it around midnight and noticing it was gone around 9am when I went out to go. Whoever took it was LONG gone by then.

So, parked on the street, I think the only people I can deter are punks with screw drivers and drunks with an audible alarm or disk lock.

But, has anyone actually used a LoJack or Phantom? Most of the reviews I can find of the LoJack are not super happy with it. Can't really find any reviews of the Phantom.

Just an off the wall idea but may be too costly in the long run.  Something trackable like an old iPhone.  They are trackable through Mobile Me.  I have used it to find my iPhone in the house.  You can make it beep, send it a message, locate it on a map and even wipe it (NA is this scenario).

I wonder if there are other phones that have cheaper services for this feature.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

The only issue with the phone is getting it to figure out it's being stolen. If there may be 8 - 12 hours between the bike being stolen and figuring out it's been stolen that's just time for the thieves to disable the phone before you can get a fix on it - assuming they're smart enough to look for it.

So I'm back to the Phantom which is basically a motion alarm hooked to a cell-phone that has GPS coupled with a monitoring system. I'm starting to convince myself  ::)

Anyone used a LoJack in any application? Ever had to activate it?

rLink - $535 - some monthly fee but first year free

http://www.rlink.com/
Phone App - rfid key - trip monitor - GPS - pretty cool stuff

Cyclone - $200
http://www.kiramek.com/english/products/cyclone/index.html
http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-alarms/cyclone-motorcycle-alarm/
Siren and includes a pager they claim good for up to 2000ft - pager is extra

Digital Guardian - $425.00 - no monthly
http://digitalguardiangps.com/products/vehicle-tracker/

No accelerometer but uses Geo-Fencing instead - if the bike moves outside some boundary you set up on a map you get notified

External GPS / Cellular antenna for stealth installation and superior reception - which may be helpful if I was going to try and stuff it into a seat hump or up under the tank.

NuvoGaurd - $99
http://www.novolutions.com/Buy_it_Now.html
Hooks up to a cell phone and calls you if the bike is moved. Couple it up with a phone that can be tracked and viola. Still on the hook for service but might make sense with the family plan.

Has to be manually armed.

The voice over here is kinda hoaky

Anyways, I'm thinking I may be nuts since none of you guys seem to use any of these  ;D

Hmmm, that sucks. I may be wrong in thinking there was another vehicle involved.

OK. I'm done. No reason to obsess on this #$%* if I don't have a bike.
