Topic: hundred dollar rolling frame

ive got a coupla weeks off work shortly and have time to play in a continuous mode,i have a good clean 550 motor and a tank i had painted already,ive found a hundred dollar rolling 500 with a tank(i advertised for near a year) and have already got a million parts from silvers,im hoping to get this together and registered during the break or real close to it,ive been doing all the dirty degreasing/stripping/sandblast stuff so i hope its just a basic "put the kit together"thing over the break,no show pony but a basic cleaned up and ridable reliable bike without blowing the budget.heres the roller.

nothing we havent seen before but heres the frame i had sand blasted by a pro,i have a cheap little sand blaster and am doing all the other unboltable small stuff with it,these are a great little unit,i get "silica"or washed plaster sand for 2 bucks a 20 litre pail from the local garden supply place.

those two holes in the head stem hold the "solo seat"comliance plate this bike has,it was done in 94,here we get like half price rego if the bike is a single or "solo"seat machine,you have to have a seat no longer than 500mm and no rear foot pegs, it costs about a hundred bucks to get it complied so i did well with this purchase.
         heres what small parts come out like with the cheap home sand blaster,itll strip paint easy,this took about 10 seconds

That looks really good dave500.  Bought an almost new table top blaster, and was trying to decide on what media to use.  Was thinking soda, but that silica / plaster sand does a great job, and it cheap.  Thanks for the tip.

yeah tintop its just a very fine white washed sand,it works if its damp aswell and leaves a good paintable surface.

Looks good, but be careful with that silica, it can really mess up your lungs!  Post more progress pictures as you have time.

absolutley smith,i use a mask,full goggles,overalls,a hat, people worry about asbestos when silicocis is just as bad,anyone who uses cement dust or cuts tiles etc should wear a dust mask,i see plenty who dont,i always use eye protection even when just blowing of parts with compressed air.home work shop safety probably isnt as widley taught as maybe it should be.always always always wear eye protection even if only grinding or wire wheeling for a second.

Good advice dave500. I have pair of safety glasses that sit in a their case beside my box.  Their the 1st thing I put on before I do anything else.

reply from dave50,,wheres my other zero?i make a point of always keeping saftey glasses on the bench grinder,i have a few pairs scattered around,make no mistake,it takes a milli second for some crud buzzed of a high speed tool to wreck the eye it hits,forever.you wont blink fast enough,maybe a new saftey thread is in order?

yeah all cool tintop,theres a few younger blokes around who might not know hazards that appear in less than a second,doing repairs and such has nearly as many dangers as fun,hate to be a downer though,just take care and be aware,even striking a hardened steel shaft with a hammer can result in a shard of steel flying of hard enough to break bone!something unknown to many.

its raining pretty much all day so its an inside play day,my wifes at work so i assembled the rear wheel inside,she hates me doing stuff in the house,its all clean though.,ive got the frame painted black again and all the small parts painted,im waiting on rear swing arm bushes from dss,they sent a packet marked with the correct number but a pair of lower shock bushes was in it,now i have four.

Well you wouldn't want them to go to waste, quess you'll have to build another bike to use them up.

its in the next issue of "just bikes" classified section,not all the stuff is listed in the advert,when this ones finished its ride and maintain only from here on,my faithfull old car needs love aswell.

Does your hundred dollar roller come with a clear title?   In some jurisdictions that would be a deal killer as the hassles in registering are huge.

We don't have those problems here, as long as it isn't stolen there's no problems at all..

yeah mick i rang the frame number through to the queensland transport and its ok,my other 500 was stolen in 91 from the seller and recovered the same day, but not cleared of the computer,that took three weeks of phone calls and statutary declarations to get a mouse click happening.

waiting on a rear tyre and those bloody swing arm bushes still,mocking it up a bit,see what nuts and bolts ill replace,the po only used a shifter on every thing it looks like,knocked the new lower shock bushes in and the new steering bearings,it already had tapered rollers but felt a bit crunchy,new side panel grommets and tank rubbers,deciding on the headlight ears.

your more than welcome mick,i want it rolling before i slot the engine in,ive got a whole big box of new stuff like loom and switches,grips and mirrors,brake hoses and pipe,the side covers are being matched to that candy red tank,still have to marry the extractors to a muffler etc.,ive got the master cylinder ready and the caliper.

still waiting on the head light ear rubbers,meanwhile ill soak a seat base in mollases,ill get a baby bath for this i think,its fermenting nicley,taking top of beer as i type.

got the side covers back from my painter,a bit of a mock up here,no badges but still factory paint theme,still waiting on those bloody headlight ear rubbers,i could put more together but i dont want to deal with the weight to drop the forks and fit the headlight ears.

thanks mick,yeah nothing flash,i think the candy red paint makes anything look good,i feel like a greyhound straining on the leash,i want to put this bike together now!
