Axle nut - how many mm?
« on: March 16, 2006, 07:19:41 AM »
Have to take my back tire off... and was planning on trippin out to get a wrench at lunch... the problem?  I forgot to measure the size of the axle nut.

What size wrench do I need guys?

ALSO.. since most everyone on here is wrenching, if anyone has a list of TOOLs and SIZES that they recommend for from most used to least used (i.e. : first buy 4 wrenches (10, 11, 12mm, 15mm)  Because I have heard that besides some specialty tools (like a wrench for the axle nut) ... there is only need for about 6 tools to fix an old honda.  Would be a great addition to the FAQs... and there is probably a list like this kicking around somewhere.

If memory serves, it's 22mm.

As for a list of tools:
8mm wrench (brake caliper bleeder screw)
2 10mm wrenches
12mm wrench
14mm wrench
17mm wrench
19mm wrench
22mm wrench
flat srewdriver
#2 phillips screwdriver
(All of these are included in the OEM toolkit)

Nice!  Thank you guys!  Just building the tool box a few wrenches at a time.. gotta have lifetime warranties!  and they don't always come cheap.

Got myself a six pack of fine - lifetime warrantied crescent wrenches (one is the cutest little key chain style).  That should do it all right.  I will eventually get a proper  sized long handle wrench for that axle nut.

And I found a great list of recommended tools (I knew I had seen one) on dan's motorcycle repair pages http://www.dansmc.com/tools.htm
It is much more generic than I would have liked.. I want to know about MY bike dammit.  (selfish I know)... but I think the listing of the OEM toolkit tools (ABOVE) is the best start.  Thank you Jonesy!

I would add to it ... a spark plug wrench, needle nose pliers, torque wrench, a big crecent wrench, funnel (with screen), magnetic pan, industrial rubber gloves (1$ at dollarama... and awesome) - a few good screwdrivers (a big one for prying) and a bag of old socks to clean everything up.

Thanks again all

I remember they used a 23mm and 21mm as well (which is why I have them) 22 and 24 'almost' fit

In the toolkit listing it says "Axle wrench" (no size is given) but mine seems to be a bit more than an inch (this is the measurement on the crescent wrench) so I would guess it's 27mm??

Got the back tire off no problemo, now it's off to the shop for a new tube.  thanks again!
