I had to laugh last week, I'd told a co-worker that my son was on holidays on the Gold Coast, as he's got fond memories of when we used to live in Brisbane. (I still dream of my weekend rides on my Ducati 900SS up to Mount Nebo and across to Mount Glorious, or was it the other way around?

Anyway, the other guy said, "Ah, Queensland, God made heaven on earth, then filled it full of dickheads!" I kinda had to agree with him, present company excepted of course.........  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

its great riding here terry,im sort of in the hills here and can leave home and never see a traffic light all day,i see plenty of dickheads though,on two wheels and four!we have a phenomenal amount of rain at the moment,i dont ride when it rains only because of the other dickheads and the fact i hate wet tarmac(rain never bothered me on dirt bikes),its no where near cold, just very wet.plenty of ducatis buzzing around here all the time.,i can hear bikes pass at the bottom of my hill, sometimes a hundred hogs,or just two or three,i can pick the dukes,a swarm of late model jappers might zip past as i tinker about, when its wet though it goes quiet, maybe one or three bikes all day.

Yeah mate, my other mate called Dave moved up to Cairns 20-odd years ago and keeps inviting me up for a holiday, he's still got his CB750K2 that he bought new in 1972, plus a Harley Electra Glide and a shed full of Kawasaki 2 strokes, and as much as I'd love to ride my Triumph up there, he's shown me pictures of all the snakes that he has to kick out of his house on a regular basis, and I think I'd rather stay at a nice motel instead...........  ;D

The only way to continue to ride ones motor bicycle in the British winter is to don a suit of tweed, riding boots and a deer stalker hat.  Always have a flask of sloe gin to hand for emergencies and a hot water bottle to put under your overcoat should the weather turn really nasty.  Keep in mind the location of the various public houses along the route where one might take refreshment.

Ha ha, I've spent a summer in Britain mate, and it felt like an Aussie winter! I could have used a suit of tweed and a deerstalker hat on the warmest day!

Then I went to the beach (well, there was no sand, only gravel and the Poms swam with shoes on, but they told me it was a beach) and grew a whole new respect for my English cousins, if this was the best weather they could ever hope for they had every right to be miserable, but they actually looked like they were enjoying it! Personally, I couldn't get back on the 'plane back to Oz quick enough!  ;D

In SD I guess you could consider a snowmobile  ;D  but here we have ice more than snow. Truly miserable stuff. As for Aussie snakes, saw enough in South Vietnam to last me a lifetime thank you.

I thought those were in South America  ;D Also, I'm told they can live 25 years (364 days 23 hours and 59 seconds longer than me if it crawled near me). Nothing with 2 legs frightens me anymore but there are other things...

G'day Terry
What year model 900SS did you have.
How does it compare to what you are ridding now
It's a good arvo for a ride in Sydney today high 20's but you'd still be riding in Sydney

G'Day Scott, it was an early desmo SS, 1978 or '79, from memory. I bought it from Phil Beaumonts in Brisbane when I lived there for a couple of years, it was an absolute POS mechanically, but it was beautiful. It was the first bike I owned after a succession of Honda 750's, a Goldwing and a Kawasaki Z1 that actually gave me that "running on rails" feeling, only problem was it'd "stand up" in corners under braking, which was somewhat disconcerting in some of the tighter corners up on Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious!

I think my current gold K2 with all of Ken Piper's mods probably handles just as well as that Duke, but a stock CB750 wouldn't get within a bull's roar of a 900SS "back in the day".

I still Kick myself though, because for the same money I paid for the 900SS, I could have bought a mint Laverda 3CL (not a Jota, but gorgeous, just the same) or a couple of Bimota's, including a HB1. Beaumonts had a lot of cool bike's then, I wish I had a time machine and a suitcase full of cash mate, I'd have one hell of a collection now, ha ha! Good thing now is that the later Duke's are still very affordable, and I'd really like one of the DOHC 1000 Monsters from a few years ago, I like the riding position, and the exhaust note is just awesome! Cheers, Terry. ;D
